## Harry Booth / London

Booth is a reporter at TIME.

[Stella McCartney](https://time.com/collection/earth-awards/2026/stella-mccartney/) believes our style shouldn’t come at the expense of our values; it should reflect them. A lifelong vegetarian, her fashion house does without animal products including leather, feathers, and fur in any designs, instead leveraging innovative materials. “We’ve worked with spider silk that’s grown in labs. We’ve made handbags out of mushrooms, and we’ve turned apple waste into shoes,” McCartney said on stage in London on March 26, as she received a [TIME Earth Award](https://time.com/collection/earth-awards/2026/), presented by her friend, actor and producer [Cate Blanchett](https://time.com/collections/women-of-the-year/6259177/cate-blanchett-2/).

McCartney’s use of novel materials often comes with a high price tag, while some are yet to make it off the runway—like Fevvers, the plant-based, naturally dyed alternatives that look and behave like ostrich feathers. But McCartney, whose fashion house celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, sees it as a long-term bet. “We’re investing in innovators who are reshaping the future of materials,” she said.

Her influence has already transcended the insular world of high fashion, boasting collaborations with H&M and Adidas. In 2012, the year London hosted the Summer Olympics, she became the first fashion designer to design apparel for the country’s team across all competitions.

The daughter of Beatles legend Paul McCartney, Stella spent her childhood between London and a farm in Scotland where her parents were early adopters of organic practices. “I was blessed to grow up in a family that loved and respected the natural world,” she said. But she also saw humanity’s disregard for “the planet and its creatures.” She said that tension shaped her.

McCartney did not hold back in calling out the fashion industry. “Every second, a truckload of textiles is burned or buried,” she said. “Hundreds of millions of trees are felled for clothing fibers. Toxic chemicals used in leather tanning seep into rivers and into human bodies. And billions of animals are slaughtered in the name of ‘luxury.’” Her pitch is that doing right by the planet and the animals is also better for humans, since “the same hidden industries that exploit animals also endanger workers, pollute communities, and strip away dignity.”

But it doesn’t have to be this way, she said. “We can—and we must—do better.”

_TIME Earth Awards was presented by Rolex and DBT._

## Transcript

Thank you for time, for making this space for us all to gather. It reminds me of how much is actually being done that doesn't get reported on. I was in the loo with someone from Unilever. I'm sitting at the at the table with Jasper, with Stella McCartney. You know, people who are actually doing things. Things are changing. And so thank you to time for gathering us to remind us that that is actually the case. But, you know, it is it is dark out there. It's it's ugly. And so I am really pleased to be here tonight to talk about beauty. And for someone who has spent their life in, in the quest of true beauty, not shallow beauty, but true beauty.

And this person, this honoree, is a trailblazing artist. And she's a dear, dear friend. Stella McCartney has spent her life and her career proving that beauty and style and sustainability don't have to live in different worlds. And long, long before it was fashionable to even have a conversation about responsible fashion. Stella was asking vital and challenging and difficult questions about where materials come from, how clothes are actually made, and what impact the industry has on the planet and on the people who inhabit it. And this year, she celebrates her brand's 25th anniversary. That's a huge achievement.

And she's come a long, long way since her sweaty days at Saint Martin's College of the Arts, where her less forward and, I would say, rather jealous peers dubbed her as an eco weirdo for following her conviction not to use leather or feathers in her designs, but she has built a global luxury brand without leather, without fur that something many people told her at the beginning when she lied it out was simply impossible. But if you know Stella, the word impossible is not in her lexicon. She has never, ever stopped pushing the conversation forward. From pioneering new plant based recycled materials to challenging the industry to rethink its relationship with nature.

Stella has shown us time and time again that creativity is not wasteful, that creativity and conscience can go hand in hand. And in fact, that is a beautiful partnership. It feels especially fitting to me that time has recognized Stella's leadership in its inaugural time 100 list, honoring her rightful place amongst those most influential figures around the world who have been shaping the world's future and the way they think about it. Now, this recognition has, I think, not only a recognition of her work within fashion, but I think it it speaks to her broader impact in other industries and how they think about sustainability and responsibility.

And we are at an inflection point. And Stella has not, however, simply responded to this panicky, rather confused moment. She has helped define it. She has held our hands as we start to move through it. She's always used her platform collegiately to challenge the norms, to inspire innovation, and to prove that true influence is grounded in purpose. And perhaps Stella for star. The thing that I admire most about you is that this has not been easy, and you've often done it alone, but you have always done it with such joy and such optimism, and with your unmistakable fck off panache. And you've shown us that the future not only of fashion, but the future generally can be truly beautiful.

And it's not just for your industry, not just for people who are interested in clothes, but for all of us who live on this planet, the planet that we all share. You are an inspiration seller. Thank you. Congratulations. Oh my God. Wow. It's ridiculous, isn't it? Wow. Oh my God. I'm literally having out of body experience right now. Okay. Bye. Kate. Um, I am deeply honored to receive this acknowledgement this evening, especially from someone who has not only left the stage, but someone that I find very inspiring and kick ***. Kate. She's back. Um, thank you for your friendship and long time support.

I wanted to thank time for this recognition. To receive this award is profoundly meaningful to me. Truly, I'm blown away. I'm so thankful. Thank you. Time. In this time of chaos. I am humbled to be surrounded by such inspiring and determined people who choose love, ethics, responsibility, kindness, and purpose over fear. I was blessed to grow up in a family that loved and respected nature, and I grew up on one of the first organic farms in England. I understood very early on that without nature there is no life. I also saw how carelessly we treat our planet and its creatures, and that tension really did shape me.

And when I chose fashion, a world that I adored. I knew I could never be divorced from my values. To design without cruelty and to create beauty without destruction. That became my life's purpose. And the truth is, is that fashion has too often been the opposite of that. Our industry is the second most harmful to the environment, and every single second, a truckload of textiles is either burned or buried, and hundreds and millions of trees are felled for clothing. Fiber, toxic chemicals used in leather tanning seep into rivers and into human bodies and billions of animals are slaughtered in the name of luxury.

But cruelty is not luxury. Waste is not beauty. And we can and we must do better. So as Stella McCartney from day one, we refused leather, fur, feathers and skin. And we've worked with spider silk that's grown in labs. We've made handbags out of mushrooms, and we've turned apple waste into shoes at Stella. We're investing in innovators who are reshaping the future of materials. And together we've saved hundreds and millions of animals lives. We've protected forests, and we've kept countless tonnes of waste out of landfills. And we've proven you don't have to sacrifice craft, fit or style to do the right thing.

Now working in this way, my business is penalized. For example, when I export a vegan handbag into America, we can get hit with up to 30% taxation on that bag. And if I take that same bag and I put a slither of pig leather onto that bag, the tax disappears. So we need to change laws and we need to have policy that incentivizes the next generation of fashion. We need to penalize financially those who are destroying our planet and its creatures. And we must come together because if we don't come together, we just can't do this alone. This is bigger than fashion. It's about people. The same hidden industries that exploit animals also endanger workers.

They pollute the communities and they strip away dignity. And when we talk about sustainability, we must talk about human welfare also. But I stand here proud to be in a room like this with so many pioneers, and I'm so energized from the new generation and the young generation of people that just won't accept these old excuses. We don't have time to whisper. We need to shout with love and creativity and with unstoppable conviction. So I want to thank everyone at Stella Actually for this award, because you just can't do any of this alone. And so my team really, this is for them and also for my family.

Um, and thank you so much. Really, I am truly, truly honored. Thank you.
