In the race to automate trucking, [Aurora Innovation](https://aurora.tech/) has pulled ahead. Last year, the company debuted its driverless Class 8 trucks on U.S. public roads; in July, it [launched its second-generation commercial hardware system](https://ir.aurora.tech/news-events/press-releases/detail/144/aurora-launches-second-generation-driverless-trucks-in-u-s-to-meet-customer-demand), the Driver 2, with SAE Level 4 technology guided by a proprietary lidar sensor that can detect what’s happening roughly 10 football fields down the road. (By removing the need for a human driver, an Aurora truck can complete a haul from Fort Worth to Phoenix up to 40% faster.)
