Richard Cartwright—Disney General Entertainment Content/Getty Images; Adam Taylor—Disney General Entertainment Content/Getty Images

Beginning in the mid-2000s, a horde of ambitious millennial women raised on [_Friends_](https://time.com/3635722/friends-viewing-guide-for-newbies/)and [_Sex and the City_](https://time.com/7288947/sex-and-the-city-best-samantha-episodes/)descended on New York to seize the glamorous careers, palatial West Village apartments, and active social and romantic lives television had promised them. Instead, skyrocketing rents forced them into outer-borough closets shared with assorted weirdos and an epochal financial crisis left them “funemployed” or hustling. A few years later, TV caught on with a new generation of single-women-in-the-city comedies: [_Girls_](https://time.com/4665930/girls-final-season-lena-dunham/), _2 Broke Girls_, [_Broad City_](https://time.com/38669/broad-city-review-comedy-central/). One of the best was also among the least heralded: 2012’s _Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23_. (Blame the cumbersome title.) Created by [Nahnatchka Khan](https://time.com/collections/american-voices-2017/4480476/nahnatchka-khan-fresh-off-the-boat/), who would go on to helm the more widely seen sitcom [_Fresh Off the Boat_](https://time.com/3694113/review-fresh-off-the-boat/), the ABC series cast Dreama Walker as wide-eyed Midwesterner June, who moves to Manhattan for a fancy job, only to find the company that hired her in apocalypse mode. Scrambling to salvage the move, she’s bamboozled into sharing an apartment with Chloe ([Krysten Ritter](https://time.com/4126495/jessica-jones-star-krysten-ritter-interview/)), a party-girl con artist and likely sociopath who is always running some deranged scam. Ritter is the main draw here, radiating a reckless charm that makes Chloe lovable even as she does hateful things. Walker’s performance as a basic ingénue whose secret weapon is tenacity makes the roommates perfect foils. Eric André and the late [James Van Der Beek](https://time.com/7377940/james-van-der-beek-death-dawsons-creek-tributes-cancer-fundraiser/) round out the dream ensemble as, respectively, June’s coffee-shop boss and—in what might be Van Der Beek’s definitive performance—a vain, sleazy version of himself, still coasting on his _Dawson’s Creek_ fame. The final ingredient is Khan’s particular shade of black humor, synthesizing lightly surreal storylines, twisted one-liners, and an endless supply of deftly deployed cultural references into one of the edgiest shows ever to enter a broadcast primetime schedule.
