Bryan Fuller is the king of the brilliant but canceled show. In the middle of a career [bookended by _Star Trek_ series](https://time.com/4420736/star-trek-discovery-new-show/), he made two bona fide cult classics: the stylish, homoerotic _Silence of the Lambs_ prequel [_Hannibal_](https://time.com/3914125/game-of-thrones-hannibal-violence/)and _Pushing Daisies_, a procedural about a man who uses his power of reanimation to solve murder cases. But his angsty-young-woman period, which yielded 2003’s _Dead Like Me_ as well as 2004’s currently-unavailable-in-any-digital-format _Wonderfalls_, could use more retrospective love. A supernatural Showtime dramedy that bears many Fuller signatures—a far-out premise, quirky characters, sarcastic dialogue—_Dead_ cast Ellen Muth in what should have been a star-making role as George Lass, a disaffected college dropout who dies in the very first episode. Instead of getting beamed up to the afterlife, George remains on Earth, having been chosen, for unknown reasons, as one of many undead “reapers” who collect human souls just before they die. She’s absorbed into a ragtag reaper crew, led by an avuncular Mandy Patinkin (whose presence should be enough to get anyone to watch any show), that hangs out at a German-themed diner. As she adjusts to a depressing vocation she really doesn’t want, George has to hold down an office job (the Almighty doesn’t pay a salary), emotionally disentangle herself from her mourning family, and finish the growing-up process she barely started in life. It’s a lot of moving parts for one show; the double-workplace-comedy and undead-coming-of-age elements work better than the somewhat generic family drama. Still, it’s far more enjoyable—comforting, even—than any series about dying young has any right to be.
