David (Akili McDowell) splits his days—and alternates the masks he wears to survive—between a magnet school that treats his poverty as an inconvenience and a complicated home life in which a gang is circling, his single mom (Alana Arenas) is always at work, and a gender-queer neighbor who takes in LGBTQ kids ([sensitively portrayed by Travis Coles](https://time.com/5745386/best-tv-characters-2019/)) offers a unique example of what it looks like to serve your community. Aided by McDowell’s protean performance, McCraney uses David’s imaginative reveries to sketch an extraordinary interior landscape, elevating what could’ve been a clichéd coming-of-age tale. Then, in the show’s second and final season, he keeps the promise of its title in an unexpected way, jumping 15 years into the future to see where all that potential and adversity leads David (played as an adult by Kwame Patterson).
