A lot happens in the pilot: Tired of grinding out a living in Vegas, ballerina-turned-showgirl Michelle (Sutton Foster) finally agrees to marry Hubbell (Alan Ruck), a longtime suitor who doesn’t exactly set her heart aflame. They move to the small coastal California town where his disapproving mom, Fanny (Kelly Bishop, a.k.a. Emily Gilmore), runs a dance school. But just when Michelle is warming up to Hubbell, he dies in a car crash. It’s a harsh opening to a show that quickly shifts into a lighter gear, as Michelle rediscovers ballet and cultivates a relationship with her grieving mother-in-law while teaching Fanny’s students. Equally central to _Bunheads_’ appeal are those eponymous young characters, four teenage girls (Julia Goldani Telles, Kaitlyn Jenkins, Bailey Buntain, and Emma Dumont) of varying backgrounds and temperaments whose rites of passage are filtered through their extracurricular passion. Along with Sherman-Palladino’s signature quippy dialogue and multifaceted female characters, the series distinguished itself by putting lots of actual dancing on screen, in patient sequences that were hilarious just as often as they were beautiful.
