If cities had documentarian laureates, then Steve James would surely be Chicago’s. In acclaimed features whose subjects range from high school basketball ([_Hoop Dreams_](https://time.com/5562158/hoop-dreams-documentary-25-years/)) to violence intervention ([_The Interrupters_](https://time.com/archive/6911761/the-interrupters-heroes-in-an-urban-war-zone/)) to the iconic _Sun-Times_ film critic [Roger Ebert](https://time.com/2957019/roger-ebert-life-itself-brutal-reviews/) ([_Life Itself_](https://time.com/2951900/roger-ebert-life-itself-documentary-interview/)), he has highlighted what makes the city extraordinary and used its diverse, Midwestern setting as a microcosm for the U.S. as a whole. James’ excellent 2020 Nat Geo series, [_City So Real_](https://time.com/5904912/city-so-real-review-nat-geo-hulu/), traced a mayoral election with compelling parallels to national politics. But his greatest Chicagoland opus might be [_America to Me_](https://time.com/5861937/america-to-me-starz-review/), a 10-part Starz documentary that follows a cross section of students at Oak Park and River Forest High School throughout the 2015-2016 school year. Located in an affluent suburb with a progressive legacy, where James had raised his own children, it was a high-performing public school whose population was split roughly equally between white students and students of color. When you broke down the numbers by demographics, though, it became clear that inequality persisted. As white kids’ test scores soared, their Black counterparts’ performance stagnated below the state average. For insight into this achievement gap, James profiled OPRF teachers working overtime to close it and chronicled tense meetings. Yet _America to Me_ spends most of its time quietly shadowing many of the teens themselves, those who defy the statistics as well as those who embody them, in the classroom and at home. What emerges is a complex portrait of a generation still burdened, even within an ostensibly exemplary school, by institutional racism.
