Alex Wroblewski—Bloomberg/Getty Images Last August, months after Lip-Bu Tan—the founder and chairman of venture-capital firm Walden International—stepped in as Intel’s CEO, President Trump pushed him to resign, calling him “highly conflicted” amid scrutiny from a Republican lawmaker over past investments in China. The following week, Trump called Tan’s rise an “amazing story”—and the week after that, the U.S. government agreed to take a nearly 10% stake in Intel. That’s the sort of turnaround Tan, a veteran investor, hopes to pull off again. He’s secured investments from Softbank and rival [Nvidia](https://time.com/7319603/nvidia-ai-quantum-computing/ "undefined"), cut over 20,000 jobs, and refocused the company around a new chipmaking process called 18A, which puts it at the cutting edge for the first time in years.
