Its leaders are siblings: Dario Amodei is CEO, while his sister Daniela is president. [Anthropic’s rapid ascent](https://time.com/article/2026/03/11/anthropic-claude-disruptive-company-pentagon/ "undefined")—half a decade after its founding, it is a behemoth valued at some $380 billion—is largely thanks to its affable AI chatbot [Claude](https://time.com/collections/best-inventions-2025/7318244/anthropic-claude-sonnet-4/ "undefined"), whose ubiquity has lit a fire under competitor OpenAI, which by some accounts is on a slower path to profitability. But that success is also a double-edged sword. Now Anthropic, which has always considered itself a safety-focused company, has to reckon with the possibility that it’s accelerating the arrival of the very dangers it fears most—a concern exemplified by a recent [standoff with the Pentagon](https://time.com/article/2026/03/11/pentagon-anthropic-battle-emil-michael/ "undefined") over the limits Anthropic tried to place on the military’s use of Claude. “We’re doing our best, but like, we don’t necessarily know what the right answer is,” Daniela told TIME just before that standoff emerged into public view. “We’re just trying to be as good of an actor as we possibly can in this really challenging situation.” _Perrigo is a TIME correspondent.
