A few years ago, Kursat Ceylan, who is blind, was trying to find his way to a hotel, using a smartphone map app and a cane while pulling luggage, when he walked into a pole, cutting his forehead. He co-developed the WeWALK—a smart cane that detects objects above chest level and pairs with apps, such as Google Maps—to help the 250 million visually impaired and blind people worldwide navigate a digital world without having to juggle a smartphone.
