In a world where nearly 50% of people suffer from problems with their teeth -- most of which are preventable -- the oral care innovator usmile is ushering in a significant new way of practicing prevention with its Series D line-up. The new D50 OralCam electric toothbrush and companion Dlite mouth-imaging tool employ the latest in technical innovation and design to give consumers a clear view of their oral health.

Offering a wide range of products, usmile enables users to visually track a variety of oral-care patterns in a way never before possible for the at-home consumer. The company’s focus is prevention over treatment, and its thinking is straightforward: the more that people can see what is happening in their mouths, the better equipped they are to take action.

With the D50 OralCam and the Dlite, usmile is entering a new phase: “purpose-built tools for visualized preventive oral care.” The company is setting a more exacting standard for preventative healthcare, as it redefines the future of the oral care category with the launch of the D50 series. At the forefront is the AI-powered OralCam toothbrush, which incorporates imaging and instant feedback to lead the way in shifting consumer habits from old-style brushing to visible care.

The D50 and Dlite are designed to make aspects of oral care that are normally difficult to see more visible, giving users information they can use between dental visits. D50 provides quick visual feedback during daily brushing, while Dlite is suitable for a more deliberate periodic review. With these models you don’t just trust that you are giving your teeth the cleaning they need – the results are there immediately to see.

With a built-in close-range camera and a visualization feature that enables it to pinpoint plaque, the D50 offers optical plaque revealing, multi-angle oral viewing, and guided attention zones for precise cleaning. Its large handle display enables users to scan and review results directly on the toothbrush to see areas they may have missed – and without having to check an app, as with previous models. A slim, flexible brush head is designed to improve access to back teeth and other hard-to-reach areas, while soft bristles around the head provide a gentler brushing experience. A feature called “visual plaque mapping” helps direct users to areas that may need additional cleaning. With the D50 a person can see and respond while brushing. Users can also sync data via Bluetooth to the app, which is designed mainly for long-term cleaning and plaque-management reports.

A complementary lightweight oral imaging tool that uses the same visual light technology as the D50, the Dlite model enables users to perform visual monitoring in a way that is difficult when using only a mirror. Dlite takes the imaging concept beyond the toothbrush by employing a close-up optical lens. Images, taken with the use of a connected smartphone, can be reviewed over time and shared with dental professionals, making Dlite less about self-diagnosis than about giving people a clearer way to observe changes and communicate concerns. This is an effective tool in keeping a check on build-up issues between visits to the dentist. It also makes the user a more informed patient, someone much better able to discuss an issue and provide information.

![](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt21f4d9823581ac78/6aa2679645f7939e341704dc/01-TIME-Article_Images-KSP3-16_9_ratio-3.png?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp)

Prevention should not depend on guesswork, usmile stresses, and with D50 and Dlite, “good design can help people see more clearly, respond more precisely, and feel more confident” that they are taking the best possible care of their teeth in their daily self-care routines. With the D Series, usmile is moving from the smart toothbrush, which tells you about your brushing technique, on to oral-care technology that helps you see what you may otherwise miss.

And though the company is highly creative and innovative, it abides by what it terms “meaningful design only.” It believes that creativity must go hand in hand with functionality, and its product developers think hard before introducing a new design change, making sure it’s not change for change’s sake. This kind of thinking has served the company well, and is reflected in the many awards for excellence usmile has received.
