Jessica Sibley, CEO of TIME, sat down with Dr. John R. Adler, renowned neurosurgeon and CEO of ZAP Surgical, for a conversation about his journey from practicing medicine to becoming a small business owner and entrepreneur.

Dr. Adler founded ZAP Surgical with the vision of transforming the healthcare landscape through cutting-edge technologies like the CyberKnife®, a radiosurgery system that uses precisely targeted radiation to treat tumors without a single incision. In pursuing this mission, he built a startup from the ground up and evolved into a driven entrepreneur whose company has experienced remarkable growth.

“We were a startup that didn’t exist 10 years ago,” Dr. Adler says. “Today, we have 30 machines around the world treating patients, and another 30 or 40 in the process of being installed.”

As ZAP Surgical has grown, so has Dr. Adler’s responsibilities, from overseeing global expansion to managing an increasingly complex operation. When asked how he balances these demands, he credits his team members and their support system.

“The team we have today is certainly capable of running the business when I’m not there,” he explains. “And fortunately, they’re all backed by TriNet. TriNet is key to making my business and my employees’ lives as effortless as possible, giving me the reassurance that when I’m traveling, my team is happy.”
