At the TIME100 AI event, TIME CEO Jessica Sibley sat down with Cristiano Amon, President and CEO of Qualcomm, to discuss the rapidly evolving role of AI and how it is reshaping the future of computing, connectivity, and the ways in which humans interact with technology.

Recently named to the TIME100 AI list, Amon explained that Qualcomm’s mission is to build the chips powering the devices “where most of the humans are,” from phones and wearables to vehicles and connected homes. As AI becomes “the new user interface”, Amon said, technology will increasingly learn how to interact with people naturally, whether through voice, sight, and context, rather than requiring humans to adapt to machines.

Amon painted a vision of a future defined by personalized, context-aware computing, where phones remain central but act as intelligent hubs connecting a network of AI-powered wearables like glasses, earbuds, and watches. These devices, he noted, will make digital assistants feel more human, like “a friend walking beside you.”

Amon also emphasized the rise of edge intelligence, explaining that while AI will be hybrid, with the edge and cloud working together, the edge is where data originates. On-device intelligence allows for faster, more secure, and personalized AI experiences. Looking ahead to 6G coverage, he shared Qualcomm’s efforts to help build the foundational technologies that not only connect, but also sense the physical world.

Overall, Amon expressed a level of hopefulness and excitement about AI’s potential, “AI has the incredible opportunity to democratize knowledge and information.”
