Organizations and project management professionals are at a critical point to lead the integration of AI to supercharge sustainability impacts but doing so responsibly and effectively is more important than ever.

Many organizations today face a dual imperative: to fulfill ambitious sustainability commitments while harnessing the transformative potential of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence.

AI has the potential to be a critical enabler in helping organizations more effectively pursue their sustainability goals. From optimizing energy consumption and supply chain logistics to transforming customer experiences and driving sustainable innovation, including efforts to regenerate biodiversity and restore natural ecosystems, businesses are reshaping how they achieve their sustainability goals using AI.

But there's a catch—integrating AI alone cannot drive positive sustainability outcomes. It needs to be leveraged properly in the context of a larger sustainability ecosystem. Engaged leaders, a clear strategy, useful data, and a responsive culture are necessary for success. Integration on the strategy level, in other words, is imperative.

Organizations must move beyond treating AI and sustainability as separate initiatives, recognizing AI's dual role as an enabler and potential barrier to achieving sustainability goals.

Based on global research, it identifies the practical steps organizations can take to drive meaningful impact, positioning AI as a catalyst for sustainable transformation..

###

### The Siloed Approach: A Missed Opportunity and Why Separate Initiatives Fail

AI demonstrates a unique capability in resolving the traditional tension between short-term returns and long-term sustainability investments. AI's ability to help deliver measurable short-term gains while enabling long-term forecasting creates a bridge between immediate business needs and strategic sustainability goals. This closes the traditional gap that often challenges sustainability initiatives by providing immediate validation and long-term justification for sustainability investments.

However, PMI's analysis of organizational structures reveals a telling pattern in how companies approach their sustainability and AI initiatives. AI capabilities targeted at sustainability initiatives are often housed within IT departments, followed by dedicated sustainability units and strategy functions. This pattern of organizational placement reflects a growing strategic shift where the integration of AI and sustainability transcends traditional departmental boundaries. Rather than operating in silos, successful organizations appear to be creating pathways for collaboration between technical expertise (IT) and sustainability knowledge (strategy).

“To drive real impact at the crossroads of AI and sustainability, we need to invest in people as much as in technology,” said Pierre Le Manh, PMP, President & CEO of Project Management Institute. “That means upskilling leaders - not in silos, but across sustainability, tech, and business, so they can work together with a shared understanding. The organizations that build that kind of culture will be the ones that lead meaningful, lasting change.”

### AI: A Double-Edged Sword (Enabler & Barrier)

While using AI can help organizations see benefits like reducing waste and accelerating the development of eco-friendly materials and products, it also presents challenges and opportunities in today's resource-conscious business landscape. The optimistic vision exists in tension with growing concerns about AI's environmental footprint, exemplified by Microsoft reporting a 29% rise in emissions since 2020 attributed mainly to AI-related data centers. To put this into perspective, on average, OpenAI's ChatGPT query demands 10 times more energy to process compared to a Google query. Goldman Sachs predicts data center energy consumption will soar 160% by 2030\.

As organizations navigate this tension, project professionals are uniquely positioned to help drive more sustainable outcomes by embedding sustainability into every stage of the project lifecycle.

To further empower project professionals and organizations to make this paradigm shift, PMI recently announced a joint venture with Green Project Management. With the integration of its sustainability-driven project management frameworks, standards, methods, certifications, and tools into the PMI ecosystem, together the two organizations are enabling project professionals to take real, measurable action on sustainability through project management. Using Green Project Management's resources, project professionals will have the capabilities to integrate sustainability and regenerative practices into their daily projects and strategies.

“As AI accelerates transformation across industries, project professionals have a responsibility to ensure that progress doesn’t come at the expense of the planet,” said Joel Carboni, Founder of Green Project Management and a pioneer in sustainable project management. “The future of the project profession lies not just in delivering successful projects, but in guiding innovation that regenerates ecosystems, fosters equity, and creates long-term value. This joint venture helps put that responsibility into practice.”

### The Path Forward: Integrating AI and Sustainability

Organizations must carefully weigh AI's resource demands against its potential benefits, particularly in sustainability-focused initiatives. While AI is not a silver bullet for sustainability success, organizations that effectively integrate AI capabilities with other critical success factors report enhanced results across multiple sustainability dimensions.

Evidence has found a synergistic chain effect, where initial AI-driven sustainability gains are reinvested to drive further improvements – suggesting that when properly deployed and managed, AI-driven sustainability initiatives could help catalyze a virtuous cycle of sustainable business transformation.

The time to act is now. Organizations and project professionals must prioritize sustainability and further equip themselves with the knowledge and tools to drive lasting impact.
