Disasters take a lot from people — homes, businesses, loved ones. But they can also strip away the smaller things that make a person feel human. For those who are facing the unthinkable, something as simple as a clean shirt or a warm shower can make all the difference. That’s the idea behind the disaster relief Matthew 25: Ministries provides.

“Matthew 25: Ministries is called to take care of people in their most dire times,” explains CEO Tim Mettey. The organization responds to disasters across the United States and around the world, delivering everything from toothpaste to deodorant to diapers — basic but essential items that are sorely needed in the aftermath of a disaster.

Whether it’s wildfires in Maui, tornadoes in the Midwest, or a hurricane on the Gulf Coast, Matthew 25’s disaster response team is ready to deploy anywhere at a moment’s notice. Once on the ground, they set up in the parking lot of a local Walmart and distribute items, which are provided by partners like P&G, to members of the community. Oftentimes, Matthew 25 workers will even deliver items to people door to door.

This year, P&G and Walmart are spotlighting the inspiring work Matthew 25: Ministries does, recognizing the selflessness of the more than 100 staff members who dedicate their time and energy to building people up during the most desperate moments of their lives. “My kids understand that I might be gone for a month,” says Marc Madama, Disaster Relief Manager. “They know that we're helping people.”

The impact of Matthew 25’s efforts is immediate and uplifting. As a person is sifting through the remains of their home and picking up scattered memories, a small gesture can feel like a miracle. “There's such a need in these times of disasters, and sometimes you just want that little bit of comfort in a scent that you know and a brand that you trust,” says Katie Schimmoeller, Director of Disaster Relief. “A lot of people say it really makes them feel human again.”

In addition to distributing supplies from familiar P&G brands like Bounty, Crest, and Pampers, Matthew 25: Ministries operates Tide Loads of Hope, a pop-up laundry service that washes, dries, and folds affected families’ clothes. Most recently, they’ve expanded their fleet of vehicles, in partnership with P&G and Walmart, to include mobile units that provide clean restrooms, changing tables, and showers stocked with body wash, shampoo, and conditioner from brands such as Old Spice and Pantene.

Matthew 25: Ministries was founded in 1991 with a mission to provide food to the hungry, water to the thirsty, and refuge to the unhoused. Over the years, Matthew 25’s global humanitarian efforts expanded to include disaster relief. What started as a modest operation with a single vehicle has grown into a fleet of more than 20 vehicles that ferry staff members to help people in need, regardless of their background or beliefs.

“The supplies and the services that we provide, it's not just about relief," says Ben Williams, Matthew 25’s Chief Disaster Relief Officer. “It's about restoring dignity to those people in that moment and giving them hope that brighter days are coming and that they'll be OK.”
