TIME CEO Jessica Sibley sat down with the president of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Lynn Martin, to discuss the importance of women being in leadership positions and to look at trends shaping the market for 2024\.

In December, Sibley rang the opening bell at the NYSE in honor of TIME’s Person of the Year at Siebert Hall, named after “trailblazer” Muriel Siebert, the first woman to buy a seat on the NYSE. “I like to think of the room as the original room that broke the glass ceiling,” said Martin.

Martin also recounts a moment in her career where she turned down an executive position because she thought she wasn't qualified. “I had the realization that if I didn't do it, someone else was going to do it, and it's a lesson that I am fortunate that I've been able to pass along,” Martin said.

As the 68th president of the world’s largest stock exchange and the second woman to ever lead the organization, Martin understands the gravity of her role. “Being the president of the New York Stock Exchange, you are the steward of the U.S. capital markets,” Martin said.

The New York Stock Exchange may have a big, but volatile market this year, as 60% of the world’s GDP will experience an election, Martin told Sibley. Adding, “That means at times there is going to be swings in the market.”

She explained how companies will have to navigate both domestic and geopolitical challenges. Despite the risks that follow from volatility in markets, Martin remains optimistic and excited.

“IPO markets are robust and willing to accept new companies at the valuations that they are hoping to achieve,” said Martin.

While there is a lot of uncertainty ahead, Martin urges leaders to work together to build resilience and drive business forward. “Those leaders who can bring together diverse teams, teams to all move in one common direction are the greatest leaders, and those are the businesses that are going to weather any storm in the market.”
