##### OWNDAYS has found success with its fresh take on eyewear, and is now looking at new frontiers

The right pair of glasses can do far more than benefit your vision. They can influence your aesthetic, reflect your personality and shape the way you present yourself to the world. Whether it’s starting at a new school, heading into a job interview or simply taking on a new challenge, a new set of frames can bring a sense of confidence and help you see situations in a better light. OWNDAYS knows this all too well. With a lineup of more than 1,000 different items per store, Japan’s fastest-growing eyeglass provider works tirelessly to ensure that every customer finds the right pair, whatever the occasion.

While the eyeglass maker started in 1989, a turning point came in 2008 when Shuji Tanaka, chairman of OWNDAYS, acquired and rebuilt the company from the ground up. With a desire to take the complexity out of buying glasses, rapid expansion beyond Japan into Singapore, Taiwan and the wider Southeast Asian market followed. With over 640 stores in total, now more than half are located overseas.

OWNDAYS president Takeshi Umiyama, who played a key role in this expansion, believes that good glasses come down to the fundamentals: stylish frames combined with high-quality construction.

Also, while many overseas markets require government-issued licenses for certain optical services, Japan does not impose the same requirements. This environment has allowed OWNDAYS to develop services and retail models domestically before introducing them worldwide. “In Japan, we can now offer services supported by automated eye-testing systems, which improve convenience and accessibility for customers,” said Umiyama.

OWNDAYS is not only banking on rising demand overseas, but also on strategic brand collaborations, AI-assisted recommendations via OWNDAYS Mirror and ventures into the world of “smart glasses.” “I think they will become one of the most important product categories in the optical industry. For us, this is an opportunity to expand the functionality of eyeglasses themselves by integrating features such as AI connectivity, voice interaction and cameras,” said Umiyama.
