Times of fiscal volatility are prompting more consumers to invest in precious metals and jewelry, embracing the growing trend of “wearable assets.” Gold prices, for example, have been estimated to reach nearly $6,000 per ounce in the short-to medium-term.

In Japan, uncompromising quality standards have created a thriving secondhand market for high-value goods. Increasingly, shoppers are now tapping into these reserves of jewelry and watches, stockpiled during the country’s rapid economic growth period. “Japanese people invested not only in financial assets but also in gold and luxury items kept at home. Many of them remain in excellent condition,” said Keiichiro Torii, president of Net Japan, one of the country’s largest luxury goods traders. For more than 30 years, Net Japan has built a business around uncovering the best of Japan’s luxury goods, with an extensive global network dedicated to sourcing and sales at the heart of their business. Their “NJ Auction” online platform is a key support for this, providing an end-to-end service with fair appraisals and delivering value to industry professionals. Since taking the helm three years ago, Torii has pushed through modernization reforms to turn Net Japan into an agile, global company. Systems such as AI-driven appraisals, smart glasses and RFID inventory management have been developed in-house, allowing Net Japan to gain an edge in this rapidly evolving market.

**“Transparency and honesty are** **extremely important in this field,** **values that we actively promote.”**

As the company expands further geographically, technology will play an important role in bringing together the wider Net Japan network into a seamless platform. Data analysis paired with on-the-ground insights are shaping Net Japan’s agile decision-making, based on market conditions. Looking ahead, the overseas market is now one of Net Japan’s key growth drivers, banking on Japan’s reputation for integrity and the mottainai (treating things with care) mindset, a fundamental for quality-conscious buyers. “We have earned strong respect within the industry, which we aim to leverage to expand into broader markets in a positive and sustainable manner,” said Torii. Spurred on by continuous development of their tech platforms, new physical locations and favorable exchange rates, Net Japan plans to have a firm presence across the United States by 2030, as well as the UAE and South Korea. “We aim to build partnerships with companies that share our philosophy and values,” Torii said.
