As the birthplace of many groundbreaking innovations, from carbon fiber and bullet trains to game consoles and karaoke, Japan is no stranger to innovation. In recent times, however, changes such as a declining population (at a rate of over 900,000 people in 2024) and an aging demographic (one-third will be over age 65 by 2050) are influencing companies to reimagine how they operate. Backed by evolving government policies and a push for greater workforce efficiency, Japan is becoming a model for how advanced economies might adapt to similar pressures in the future.

From logistics and transportation to software and automation, the nation’s business leaders share a glimpse into how innovation is shaping the future across industries. 

Digitally Enabled Machining, Meira Corporation. President Makoto Ohashi says, “Globally, AI and digital tools are gaining momentum. Lately, many Japanese start-ups are emerging in the digital space, aiming to bridge the gap between major tech firms and manufacturers. We see great potential in incorporating their technologies into our production lines to enhance our manufacturing capabilities.” 

High-precision 3D maps, Dynamic Map Platform. President Shuichi Yoshimura says, “Our data strengthens machine learning and improves AI’s ability to learn, which is especially beneficial in areas like autonomous driving and ADAS. Expectations for those sectors are high, and they align closely with what our technology offers.” 

$65 billion

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) aims 

for 70% of all Japanese SMEs to have introduced DX initiatives by 2030.

Innovative Sensors, Shinkawa Electric. President Fumito Shinkawa says, “We are developing next-generation technologies such as ultra-low temperature sensors capable of operating at –253°C, suitable for the hydrogen economy, and high-precision sensors that can measure thickness at the nanometer level.” 

Drilling Substrates for AI Chips, Via Mechanics. President Hideaki Shimizu says, “By around 2029, I believe glass substrates will be key players in semiconductor chiplets, specifically used in data centers. Although at the beginning their use cases will be limited, eventually glass substrates will become mainstream in the industry.”

Industry-leading Railway Engineering, Mi-Ne Seisakusho. President Toshiaki Mine says, “We provide maintenance services for tram projects across Japan. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has been encouraging LRT (light rail) and park-and-ride systems to reduce congestion in the city centers.” 

Next-generation Logistics, Trancom. President Yasuhiro Jinno says, “What makes our automation unique is that it’s not just about machines, it’s designed around operational know-how. It reflects the real issues our staff face daily and offers flexible, modular automation that can be adapted to a variety of warehouse environments.”

Telecommunications Solutions, NTT Innovative Devices. CTO Masahito Tomizawa says, “The important point is to have multiple data centers act as a single unit, connected via optical transmission, enabling low latency and power consumption. Energy distribution via optical networks is vital and will be coming within the next few years.”
