PFAS: per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances, have emerged as a pressing environmental concern, with regulatory agencies scrambling to address their growing impact. Widely used in products ranging from non-stick cookware to firefighting foams, these so-called “forever chemicals” are now under scrutiny for their potential health risks.

While the production of many PFAS compounds is being phased out amid mounting opposition, the greater challenge remains: how to remove the vast amounts already present in the environment. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Japan’s environmental solutions manufacturer Ryuki Engineering is stepping up to meet that challenge. Long recognized for its environmental and filtration technologies, developed through decades of supporting tunnel construction in Japan, Ryuki is now applying that know-how to PFAS remediations systems. Its ECO Clean LFP system combines activated carbon with proprietary pleated filtration technology, enabling highly efficient PFAS removal.

Following extensive trials and testing in picturesque Okinawa, the company is preparing for full-scale deployment in markets around the world, with international interest steadily growing after demonstrations at global PFAS conferences. “We ask members of academia to evaluate our results and provide advice. This has been a turning point for us, giving us not only a working system, but also clear evidence of the results,” said President and CEO of Ryuki Engineering, Satoshi Nishimura.
