The world has always looked towards Japan as a hub for innovation and manufacturing. The nation has been renowned for exports since the days of the post-war economic boom. Today, Japanese businesses are reaping the benefits of globalized thinking with exciting new overseas sales drives and collaborations. Across a diverse range of sectors and industries, leading firms are looking to develop greater international links to help navigate a fluctuating global economy and shifting political landscapes.

Logos Holdings Co., Ltd. has established a subsidiary in the Philippines as it seeks to boost its worldwide business. “For overseas expansion, our priorities include not only reducing operational costs but also elevating design quality and customer experience from a global perspective,” said President Yuichi Ikeda. “By developing local talent and transferring technology, we aim to contribute to local employment while providing high-quality, Japanese-standard housing services.”

Yoshinori Iwase, president of Iwase Cosfa Co., Ltd., is looking to markets worldwide for growth and development. “In addition to strengthening our presence in Europe through our French subsidiary, we plan to expand our operations in Africa, starting with Morocco. We also see promising opportunities in South America, including Mexico and Brazil, as well as in the Middle East,” said Iwase. “Our corporate culture emphasizes supporting employees’ ambitions, such as their desire to take on challenges and to pursue initiatives in specific regions,” he added.

Taizo Ota, chairman of Japanese business umbrella organization FactorISM, said more needs to be done to improve international ambitions. “In terms of globalization, there’s still a gap among our member companies. Even if other companies aren’t as established, we still try to exhibit them at trading shows overseas and market our products to international markets, so we can hopefully have more opportunities in the future,” said Ota.

Overseas growth is also a major target for Yushiro Inc., according to President Masanori Arisaka. “Expanding overseas can be quite challenging, and we are prepared to face even more challenges in the future. We currently operate twelve bases across nine countries, with local staff managing operations in the U.S. and Malaysia,” said Arisaka. “If we aim to conduct business with global corporations in the future, we will need to adopt a more global mindset and business structure. I believe that establishing a robust global governance policy will be an important part of our strategy moving forward,” he added.

Southeast Asia is a major hub for many ambitious Japanese companies, including Aizen Co., Ltd. “Our company operates a factory in Ayutthaya, Thailand, supplying products to motorcycle, automobile and agricultural machinery manufacturers such as Kubota, Triumph and Mitsubishi Motors,” said President Hideyuki Arai.

Meanwhile, looking west is an important part of the strategy of manufacturing firm YS Tech Co., Ltd. “We previously had an exclusive U.K. partner to enter the European market, but that company was later acquired by a Dutch firm. Thanks to that original partnership, however, our footprint in Europe expanded significantly,” said President Kenji Takehisa. “Together with our presence in the U.S. and Canada, we now have access to 36 different countries through trusted agents,” he added.

According to Yasushi Furubayashi, managing director of TEIN, Inc., further global collaborations are required in the modern business climate. “Traditionally, Japanese companies believed in doing everything themselves, but that is no longer realistic. We make full use of our resources in China, a country that continues to drive innovation, and we also learn directly from the markets we serve,” said Furubayashi. “Thailand, for example, is an important market for us, but the influx of Chinese EV makers there raises new questions for our future strategy. While most of our products are designed for Japanese cars, the EV ratio is increasing rapidly, and we must adapt,” he added.

In retail, Japanese angling chain Ofuji Fishing Tackles Co., Ltd. is also aiming to widen its reach. “A few years ago, we launched a website specifically designed to reach overseas customers, and it allowed us to establish new partnerships,” said President Kenichi Ofuji. “We were able to connect with clients from around the world, including a distributor in Turkey. We have also built partnerships in Lithuania, so we aim to continue expanding our network to make our products available worldwide. Our long-term goal is to establish our own shop outside of Japan,” he added.
