##### Fujita Health University is bringing together award-winning academic work with world-class facilities.

A strong culture of academic partnership and a declining population are just some of the reasons why Japan has become a world leader in clinical research and treatment, as researchers find new ways to help people live healthier, for longer. The 2025 Nobel Prize, for example, was awarded to a team that included Shimon Sakaguchi, whose work on regulatory T cells has led to breakthrough treatments for autoimmune diseases and allergies. He joins a long line of distinguished Japanese researchers in the medical field, from Yoshizumi Ishino and his team’s discovery of repeating DNA sequences in 1987, which eventually contributed to the development of the CRISPR gene-editing tool, to the development of statins and ivermectin.

This pedigree of research and clinical excellence has led to robust educational institutions across the country, including Fujita Health University, based in Aichi prefecture. The university and its adjoining hospital are emerging as a hub for advanced medical treatment within the wider region. Particular fields include cancer treatment, with the university hosting a Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) center featuring state-of-the-art equipment. Used to treat advanced tumors, especially in cases of pancreatic cancer, BNCT is estimated to have provided therapeutic benefit for up to 10,000 patients in Japan alone.

Dr. Nakao Iwata, president of Fujita Health University, is committed to not only respecting the legacy of Japan’s medical institutions but also embracing modern trends, with an ethos of “open-source research.” “I consider our hospital a smart hospital,” he said. “Robotics is now a big part of our approach. Some surgeries require significant physical effort, and staff must work around the clock. To support these treatments and improve outcomes, we are using robots and advanced information systems,” Iwata added.

Fujita Health University Hospital is in fact the largest medical facility in Japan, providing a seamless pipeline from teaching and research to clinic practice, with improved patient outcomes. The hospital is doubling down on providing cutting-edge treatments for conditions ranging from addiction to late-stage cancer. “A key benefit of being a private, agile university is that we can pivot quickly into fast-moving areas of global urgency, which can be more difficult for public universities and larger institutions in Japan to do,” said Iwata.
