Japan is one of the healthiest nations on Earth, with a renowned public health system and a famously nutritious diet that supports world-leading life expectancy rates. This reputation stems from an ingrained dedication to improvement and wellbeing found in traditional culture, cuisine and medical research. Daisuke Tochimoto, president of pharmaceutical and herbal medicine firm Tochimoto Tenkaido Co., Ltd., paid tribute to Japan’s unique healthcare. “Western practices and kampo (traditional medicine) are integrated; medical schools in Japan provide education in both,” said Tochimoto. Kojiro Koda, president of medical technology business Coden Co., Ltd., believes continued innovation is vital. “The Japanese government has allowed SMEs like us to advance into the medical field. Businesses can understand what doctors might need and invent cutting-edge technologies,” said Koda. Japan’s high expenditures on healthcare and its aging population are stimulating new research. “We must consider age-related diseases such as dementia. We are working on R&D that may assist in detecting the causes of such diseases,” said Yuichiro Ueno, president of chemicals firm Dojindo Laboratories. Motoki Ozawa, president of Nidek Co., Ltd., is also factoring this in. “Human beings are living longer, which provides a strong background for the increase in age-related eye conditions,” said Ozawa. Restaurant chain Joyfull Co., Ltd. is addressing growing preferences for healthy food. “We have introduced a whole line of new dishes with low fat and high protein, as well as those suitable for elderly people who are frail,” said President Kurumi Anami. In Japan’s cosmetics industry, strict regulations help maintain standards. “Manufacturers have no choice but to prioritize very high quality,” said Kazuo Okabe, president of Nail Labo Corporation.
