Located in historic Diriyah, just outside the capital city of Riyadh, the project will tap into the region’s rich history to create a sustainable, pedestrian, city of the future. The master plan for the city includes 22,500 homes, over 37 hotels, commercial office space, and more, all accessible by subterranean public transit, as there will be no cars in Diriyah. (According to Haslam, the company has already completed excavation for this complex underground infrastructure.) And, in homage to the region’s heritage, the new Diriyah is constructed entirely of adobe mud brick in the area’s traditional Najdi architecture. The walkability aspect is important, Haslam said, because it helps foster meaningful cultural exchange in a way that’s impossible in car-dependent cities. Diriyah hopes to improve quality of life for its future residents, extend life expectancies, and encourage young professionals to start their families. The City of Earth is also intended to attract visitors, and in so doing challenge much of the world’s misconceptions of the Arabian Peninsula. The $63 billion project, Haslam explained, is one of the biggest construction projects in the world, and spans an area more than six times larger than the country of Monaco. But it has a tight deadline. Haslam compared its accelerated timeline to other planned cities, such as Dubai, which took 30 years to complete.
