# Today’s Research Funding Leads to Tomorrow’s Medical Breakthroughs

Many families have been affected by serious or chronic illness.

 Whether it is a parent confronting a cancer diagnosis, a grandparent losing ground to Alzheimer’s, a child learning to manage juvenile diabetes, or a partner recovering from heart failure, millions of Americans have sat in waiting rooms or at kitchen tables anchored by a single hope: a better treatment, a longer life, or a permanent cure.

 What is less obvious in those moments of crisis is the long, invisible path that makes those treatments possible. Modern medical breakthroughs do not happen overnight. They unfold over decades in laboratories at medical schools and teaching hospitals nationwide, where researchers rigorously test new ideas and concepts, build on foundational discoveries, and systematically take on disease.

According to the[ American Cancer Society](https://pressroom.cancer.org/cancer-statistics-report-2026), nearly 5 million cancer deaths have been averted over the past three decades, while data published in the[ _Journal of the American Heart Association_](https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/JAHA.124.038644) indicate that heart attack deaths have declined by 89% since 1970\. Research has also contributed to advances in treatment and outcomes for diabetes, stroke and rare pediatric conditions.

[NIH-funded research](https://www.aamc.org/about-us/aamc-leads/robust-nih-funding-saves-lives-strengthens-america) has laid the groundwork for modern cancer immunotherapies, precision medicine, gene therapies, and countless other innovations transforming patient care across every state.

“Scientific research often depends on consistent, long-term funding that extends across federal budget cycles,” notes Dr. David J. Skorton, MD, President and CEO of the AAMC. “When research funding stalls, clinical trials pause, promising therapeutic pipelines wither, and emerging scientific talent on which future progress will be based is diverted elsewhere.”

Although medical research forms part of the federal budget, its funding supports work intended to improve disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Importantly, the impact of this funding reaches far beyond major academic health centers. NIH funding supports institutions, clinical trials, laboratories, and health care work across the United States, contributing to research activity and employment in local communities. And a discovery made in one lab can change lives in every neighborhood across the country.

Medical research funding has contributed to measurable developments in prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

The therapies that might save lives tomorrow are being discovered in laboratories today. Decisions about scientific research funding therefore carry potential implications for patients, families, and the development of future treatments.
