In a small house on the red soil of the Northern Cape, a 92-year-old woman named Ouma Katrina Esau speaks a language researchers believe has been spoken in southern Africa for tens of thousands of years. The University of Cape Town gave her an honorary doctorate for documenting it, and South Africa awarded her the Order of the Baobab for teaching it to children in a classroom beside her home.

Esau is among Indigenous Elders of 15 nations whose recordings open[ ORIGIN](https://ourorigin.earth/), a worldwide gathering on Oct. 17\. Each contributes in their own language alongside an English translation. The sequence begins in Aotearoa New Zealand and travels west with the sun, and it functions as something closer to an archive than a performance.

#### **A calendar with a gap in it**

Look at what humanity actually observes together, and a pattern emerges. Many holidays are rooted in national, religious, or commercial traditions. Those closest to universal, New Year’s Eve among them, are staggered across 24 time zones, so the celebration is less a shared moment than a relay.

International observances exist, of course. The United Nations has designated dozens. What organizers hope to add is a moment when people around the world pause at roughly the same time around a shared idea, which is a meaningfully different proposition. A World Cup final can create a rare sense of synchronized global attention. Almost nothing else on the calendar is.

ORIGIN’s organizers are proposing to build one deliberately, and to anchor it not in a nation or a faith but in the fossil record.

#### **Why the location matters**

The flagship gathering,[ Origin South Africa](https://ourorigin.earth/za/), runs Oct. 16 to 18 at the Kromdraai Impact Hub inside the Cradle of Humankind outside Johannesburg. The choice is not decorative. According to South Africa’s national tourism body, the limestone caves there have produced close to 40 percent of all known hominin fossils, including Mrs. Ples and Little Foot. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1999, and Kromdraai remains an active excavation.

The argument runs roughly like this. The fossils beneath that ground long predate many of the borders, scriptures, languages, and racial categories that shape society today. If there is a factual basis for treating the species as a single thing, it is buried at that site, and holding the observance there makes the claim physical rather than rhetorical.

#### **Who is running it**

The office of the Dalai Lama recognized it as the most successful global event of its kind supporting the Tibetan people.

Lamara Heartwell, a great-granddaughter of one of Exxon’s co-founders, leads the capital side under a framing she calls True Wealth. The organization says it aims to raise $10 million by Oct. 17 to support soil restoration, food systems, ecological restoration, and Indigenous leadership, which it describes as coordination capital rather than the point of the exercise.

#### **What actually occurs**

A live broadcast will move between continents for several hours, and a Global Yoga Wave invites studios to move through a shared sequence.

After the invocation, participants are asked to touch soil, stone, or a plant and describe aloud the world they want. Then an anthem plays.

Underneath it all sits[ Seed the Dream](https://ourorigin.earth/seed-the-dream/), a request to plant something and register the location on a map that fills in as commitments accumulate. The organizers have a phrase for the shift: from doom to bloom.

#### **The first one**

Every observance humanity keeps had a first year, held by people who could not know whether anyone would hold the second.

That is what Oct. 17 is. The organizers are attempting the first gathering built around the one thing every person alive already shares, and they are doing it while the voices that open it can still be recorded. Ouma Katrina Esau turns 93 this year. The[ Elders on that recording](https://ourorigin.earth/first-nation-elders/) are not a symbolic flourish. They are the reason the date is fixed.

Whatever else the day produces, it produces an archive and a precedent that a species can mark its own origin the way nations have always marked their founding.
