Scott Inukai and his sister Shannon Inukai-Cuffee may have taken over their father’s business, but they get to live a very different life than he did.

Their father, Richard “Dick” Inukai, was born in the Japanese internment camps during World War II. “He faced a lot of racism because of the war and what had happened just based on his looks,” said Inukai-Cuffee. He would wear hats and keep his head down low to hide from the discrimination. “I think a lot of that drove his ambition later in life, just facing those kinds of circumstances.”

Despite those challenges, their father grew up to become a beloved, charitable and successful car dealer in Oregon. He always felt blessed and supported by his community–which is why he was constantly seeking opportunities to give back to it, too. He was especially involved with the Boys and Girls Club, largely because his kids and employees’ kids relied on it.

When their dad passed away in 2011, the sibling duo knew they needed to keep his legacy alive. And that started with taking over the dealership.

“I don't think there was ever any question that we would keep going after he passed. He kind of planned it for us,” Inukai explained.

But they didn’t just want to carry on the business in honor of their father–they also wanted to maintain his acts of service.

“One of the things that we really wanted to do was to preserve his memory through philanthropy. “Giving back was something that was just part of who he was,” said Inukai-Cuffee.

Enter The Inukai Family Foundation, which the siblings founded to serve a number of nonprofits and causes that aim to create positive youth development. Today, it pumps resources into Meals on Wheels, hospice care, local schools and teachers, the Boys and Girls Club, and the Japan America Society of Oregon, which teaches kids about Japanese culture.

And while their father needed to hide his Japanese features with a baseball cap to fly under the radar, his grandchildren all proudly and firmly identify as Asian and passionately engage with their Japanese heritage.

“That's why we created the Inukai Family Foundation, to really help his legacy live on along with our heritage,” said Inukai. “He wanted to make sure, as he watched his family grow, that they didn't forget where we came from,” echoed his sister.

Like their father, what drives the Inukai family to give back is a sense of loyalty to the community that raised them. It certainly helped that they had a good example set for them, too.

“Dad’s philanthropy was part of who he was. And it just became part of what we did,” said Inukai-Cuffee.

The foundation has focused especially on supporting the The Inukai Family Boys and Girls Club in Hillsboro, Oregon, which offers a host of after school and summer activities for youth ages 6-18\. The club’s programs are designed to provide a safe and positive place for kids to discover their full potential as caring, engaged and responsible community members.

The siblings understand the significance of mentorship and guidance in an ever-evolving world. They are following in their father’s footsteps by inspiring the next generation of leaders. By offering scholarships and youth development opportunities, they are investing in the future of their community. Their commitment to empowering kids is emblematic of their mission to drive change from within.

“There's so much need. And when you give, no matter how small or how big, people are grateful,” said Inukai.

“I think our dad would be super proud of the things that we've been able to do to impact the community, “ said Inukai-Cuffee.
