# Could Increasing Immune-IQ™ Help Reduce the Risk of Chronic Disease and Support Healthy Aging?

[Alex Blyth](https://www.linkedin.com/in/alex-blyth-a33b7a/ "undefined"), inventor, biologist, economist, and biotech entrepreneur, points to a query he believes deserves greater attention: Why does the immune system allow the bodily systems and cell quality to decline with age and ultimately develop chronic and fatal diseases? Through his work in oncology, immunology, and longevity science, he has observed patterns suggesting that important signals often emerge long before conventional diagnosis. “Why do we wait until people are sick before we act?” Blyth asks. “A more valuable question may be how early we can understand that the body is beginning to decline, and what the best lead indicators are for that.”

That perspective has been shaped by more than two decades in life sciences. Having worked across biotechnology innovation, healthcare strategy, and immunotherapy development, Blyth became increasingly interested in the mechanisms that influence long-term health before disease becomes visible. “My work in cancer and other emerging research is increasingly suggesting that bodily decline follows immune decline. The immune system may play roles beyond defending against infections, potentially helping the body maintain stability and address various internal changes. I believe that when aspects of this system become less effective, this could contribute to the accumulation of biological ‘errors,’ which might be associated with conditions often seen with aging, such as certain cancers, cardiovascular issues, cognitive decline, or autoimmune tendencies,” Blyth says. 

He notes that current clinical tools, such as a full White Blood Cell Count, mainly provide information about the numbers of different immune cells rather than offering a broad picture of how well those cells might be functioning. What he believes is needed is an all‑encompassing way to assess the immune competence of different white blood cells against different threats (cancers, aged cells, viruses) and friends (healthy cells, foods, friendly bacteria).

The timing of this conversation is significant. The World Health Organization reports that [noncommunicable diseases](https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/noncommunicable-diseases "undefined") accounted for 75% of all non-pandemic-related deaths, with cardiovascular disease, cancer, metabolic disorders, and related chronic conditions representing the largest share. Meanwhile, a McKinsey [industry report](https://www.mckinsey.com/mhi/our-insights/the-health-of-nations-stronger-health-stronger-economies "undefined") suggests that although people are living longer, many now spend more years managing illness, prompting growing interest in strategies that support healthy years of life alongside longevity. 

For Blyth, this reflects a broader characteristic of modern medicine. “I’ve seen healthcare systems achieve remarkable advances in diagnosis and treatment, but much of their infrastructure still focuses on identifying and managing disease after symptoms emerge,” he says. “While this reactive model has delivered substantial benefits thus far, particularly for acute conditions, the next era of preventing chronic disease requires a more pre-emptive approach because of the longer biological timelines involved.” 

That distinction matters to Blyth because biological and immune dysfunction may begin years before visible illness. Earlier visibility, he emphasizes, could create opportunities for more informed decision-making, improved quality of life, and potentially lower long-term healthcare burdens. According to the same report, preventive interventions account for a substantial share of the health gains that could be achieved globally by 2050, highlighting the growing importance of earlier action.

“Recent advances in AI, computational biology, and large-scale health data have expanded what may be possible,” Blyth says. Instead of focusing exclusively on disease detection, he notes that researchers can increasingly examine patterns associated with biological risk, resilience, and decline. He regards this transition as an important development. “The future of healthcare may involve understanding where a person is heading biologically, not simply documenting where they are today,” he adds.

Within that framework, the immune system occupies a central role in his thinking. Blyth views immune competence as one of the body’s earliest monitoring functions that can potentially evaluate tissues, identify abnormalities, coordinate repair, and remove cellular debris. He argues that shifts in immune performance may offer valuable insight into future health trajectories. 

Blyth illustrates this concept through the idea of the immune system as a maintenance network. According to him, when that network functions efficiently, damaged or aging cells are identified and cleared. As immune performance changes over time, those processes may become less effective, allowing biological dysfunction to accumulate. “The immune system is constantly making decisions,” Blyth explains. “Health may depend heavily on how accurately it distinguishes friend from foe and how proportionately it responds.”

This philosophy forms the foundation of Immune-IQ™, an AI-enabled platform designed to evaluate immune competence and integrate it with broader biological data. Drawing from functional assays, immune biomarkers, genetics, epigenetic signals, microbiome information, imaging, and other health inputs, the platform seeks to create a more comprehensive picture of an individual's biological status. Blyth argues that both sides of this equation matter. “Health is not simply about activating the immune system or suppressing it,” he says. “It is about helping the system make better decisions, and that is why we call it Immune-IQ™.”

This emphasis on personalization also reflects his concerns about broad, one-size-fits-all longevity strategies. AI, he notes, offers a way to analyze complex combinations of variables and support more individualized recommendations based on a person’s unique biological profile, rather than taking supplement stacks that may work against what the actual problem is.

Blyth uses the current interest in anti‑inflammatory supplements and medications as an example, suggesting that while reducing inflammation can be helpful in certain situations, it may not always be straightforward. “If inflammation isn’t resolving after an initial trigger, some people might see a rationale for trying to lower it,” he says. “But if the inflammation were linked to something like an undetected condition or a less active immune response, then dampening that response could be viewed differently.” 

As predictive healthcare continues to evolve, Blyth sees the convergence of immune science, AI, and preventive medicine creating new possibilities for extending healthspan. After all, expanding access to proven preventive interventions could generate substantial health and economic benefits over the coming decades.

Overall, Blyth emphasizes that the next major advance in medicine may emerge from understanding biological dysfunction while meaningful opportunities for intervention still exist.
