Sep 30, 2026 11:01 AM UTC The emerging leaders featured on the cover of the TIME100 Next issue are chosen because they represent a new wave of influence—but the ingredients that went into making the set for the 2026 cover shoot were decidedly old-school: paper, scissors, and a home printer. The [TIME100 Next](https://time.com/collection/time100-next/2026/) list features rising stars who are taking ahold of the moment, certain to be a part of something bigger than themselves despite only getting started. This year’s three covers were photographed this summer in London and New York City by Stefano Giuliano, on sets built by hand by art director Jana Frost, who created fitting worlds for each of those honorees to inhabit: Comedian—and costume aficionado—[Druski](https://time.com/collection/time100-next/2026/druski/) rises from his throne in a trench coat, actor and _Saturday Night Live_ standout [Ashley Padilla](https://time.com/collection/time100-next/2026/ashley-padilla/) plays the clown, and singer [Raye](https://time.com/collection/time100-next/2026/raye/) is positioned Venus-like on a giant rose. The result juxtaposes the newest big names in culture with what looks like a century-old theatrical stage. Frost, the set artist, says each scene “starts as a chaotic sketch where I have to say to the whole crew, 'Stay with me on that, let me explain.'” She selects archival images, composes them into a collage, prints them at home, and stitches the pieces into an installation. Each set implemented about 500 individual sheets of A3 paper, weighing in at a total of 55 lb. Coming up with the story is the fun part: “Then reality sets in and I remember someone has to actually build the thing.”  The inspiration comes from early cinema, when theatrical stage design met with the silver screen. The medium was a deliberate choice, too. “Everyone's optimizing right now, chasing efficiency, and artists are under more pressure than ever to just produce,” Frost says. “This medium is my quiet argument against that” A method that some would call “inefficient,” she calls accessible. “Anyone with a printer can do this,” she says. “I wanted to bring something tactile back into a culture that's forgotten how to sit with anything slow.” When [the stars ](https://time.com/article/2026/09/30/how-we-chose-time100-next/)arrived, they became a part of the grand collage. “They're not just posing in front of a backdrop, they're stepping into the paper theatre,” Frost says. Days before each shoot, she sketches the pose she wants, though she never shows it to the subjects. Somehow, they tend to find themselves exactly where Frost imagined them to be. She was nervous going in; three subjects meant three completely different worlds, and she didn’t want to flatten anyone “into a version of themselves that wasn't quite right.” Her worry was whether the sets would feel like she was “projecting my vision onto someone else's career.” But in some ways, that kind of imagining is part of the beauty of a list of emerging trailblazers, as it asks us to imagine who they are becoming, and what the many iterations of their fame might look like along the way.  The camerawork itself mirrors this sentiment. “For me, photography really begins in that interaction between the person and the world around them,” says Giuliano. “There are moments you could never fully plan beforehand, and it’s beautiful to be there to capture them as they happen.” Guliano has shot with Frost several times and says it never turns into a formula. “Every time I step onto one of her sets, it feels completely new and fresh, and there’s always something unexpected to discover through the camera,” he says. “The world is different, the person is different, and photographically you’re discovering a completely new relationship each time.” The 2026 TIME100 Next list captures the emerging leaders, advocates, and innovators at the center of our changing world.
