### FAQ

#### Is a PMP certification worth it?

A Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification is widely considered a valuable certification for project managers seeking to advance their careers. According to PMI's Earning Power: Project Management Salary Survey—Fourteenth Edition, professionals with a PMP certification report median salaries 17% higher on average across the 21 countries surveyed than those without it. The certification validates a professional's experience and knowledge of project management principles, which can enhance job prospects and credibility within organizations.

#### What are the best certifications for project managers?

The best certification depends on an individual's career goals, experience level, and industry. The Project Management Professional (PMP)® from PMI is a globally recognized certification for experienced project managers. For those newer to the field, PMI's Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® is a common starting point. Other notable certifications include those focused on agile methodologies, such as the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)®, and program management certifications like the Program Management Professional (PgMP)®. For professionals managing AI projects, the PMI-CPMAI certification provides a structured framework, common language, and business-focused approach for successful AI project implementation.

#### How does PMI support career growth for professionals?

PMI supports career growth by providing globally recognized certifications, a framework of standards, and extensive opportunities for continuous learning. Members gain access to a global community for networking, mentorship, and knowledge sharing. The organization also produces research and thought leadership on emerging trends, helping professionals stay current with skills in areas like AI, agile practices, and strategic business management. These resources are designed to help professionals at all levels enhance their skills and advance their careers.

#### What is the PMBOK® Guide?

The PMBOK® Guide, or A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, is PMI’s foundational guide to generally accepted project management knowledge and practice. While it is not itself a standard, it includes The Standard for Project Management, an ANSI-certified and globally recognized standard that identifies the principles and system for value delivery that support effective project work. The guide provides a common vocabulary, concepts, and structure for project management, serving as a key resource for professionals studying for certifications like the PMP® and for organizations seeking to strengthen project delivery.

#### How is AI changing project management?

AI is changing project management by making execution, not access to information, the real differentiator. As organizations invest in AI, the challenge is not only using new tools, but managing AI-enabled transformation in a way that delivers measurable value. Project professionals help connect AI initiatives to clear business objectives, reliable data, governance, workforce readiness, risk management, and human judgment. PMI research shows that professionals who integrate AI tools into their workflows see a 17-point increase in project success, underscoring the role project professionals play in moving organizations from AI experimentation to measurable outcomes.

#### What are the most important skills for a project manager?

Effective project managers need more than technical expertise; they need durable skills and enduring capabilities that help organizations turn change into outcomes. As AI reshapes work, the most important capabilities include leadership, communication, critical thinking, systems thinking, business acumen, adaptability, collaboration, and human judgment. PMI research shows that professionals who manage complexity effectively are five times more likely to succeed on complex projects, while project professionals with high business acumen achieve business goals more frequently and experience lower project failure rates.

#### How can I get involved with the PMI community?

Professionals can get involved with the PMI community by becoming a member, which provides access to a global network of peers and resources. Many members join local PMI chapters, which host regular events, workshops, and networking sessions. Online, PMI's projectmanagement.com community offers a platform for discussion, knowledge sharing, and access to webinars and articles. Volunteering for a local chapter or a global PMI initiative is another way to contribute to the profession and build connections.

#### What is the difference between PMP and CAPM?

The PMP (Project Management Professional)® and CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management)® are both certifications offered by PMI, but they target professionals at different career stages. The CAPM is an entry-level certification designed for individuals with little or no project experience, validating their understanding of fundamental project management knowledge and terminology. The PMP is for experienced project managers and requires a combination of formal education and years of documented project leadership experience, making it a more advanced and globally recognized certification.

#### How does PMI support social impact?
PMI supports social impact by helping individuals, nonprofits, NGOs, and communities use project management to turn purpose into measurable outcomes. Through the PMI Educational Foundation, PMI expands access to project management education for youth worldwide, including underserved and underrepresented populations. President [Donald Trump](https://time.com/collection/100-most-influential-people/2026/donald-trump/) said he expects the [U.S. and Israel’s war with Iran](https://time.com/article/2026/09/02/us-iran-deadly-strikes-attacks-civilians-sirik-strait-hormuz/) to end “immediately after” the [midterm elections](https://time.com/article/2026/09/10/trump-dividend-five-thousand-dollars-midterms-republican-convention/).

Trump suggested that Iran is on the verge of collapse, but that its government is holding out in hopes of hurting Republican political prospects in November.

“They’re desperate to try and affect the election so that we can get a nice weak group of people in there and leave them alone and let them have their nuclear weapon,” Trump told reporters as he headed to the Republican midterm convention in Dallas on Wednesday.

But “they can’t hold out any longer,” he said.

Trump added that “it’s going to take a little bit longer than the midterm” for gas prices to come down, but that they would fall once Iran soon seeks an end to the war, which is now in its seventh month.

Trump’s comments come as [renewed fighting](https://time.com/article/2026/08/31/us-iran-strikes-larak-island/), including a barrage of tit-for-tat strikes in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, has [driven up energy prices](https://time.com/article/2026/06/19/us-iran-deal-strait-hormuz-shipping-oil-gas-prices/) to their highest levels since late May. The global benchmark oil price [topped $100 a barrel](https://time.com/article/2026/09/09/iran-us-base-jordan-oil-tankers-war-strikes/) for the first time since July.

The national average for gasoline in the U.S. climbed 7.3 cents to $4.22 a gallon on Wednesday, the largest single day increase since May, according to [AAA](https://gasprices.aaa.com/). Diesel reached a record $5.94 a gallon on Wednesday.

The Trump Administration has sought to tamp down rising energy prices amid growing affordability concerns among Americans. Last month, the Administration [extended the Jones Act Waiver](https://time.com/article/2026/08/05/jones-act-waiver-fuel-gas-costs-maritime-industry-iran-war/) for another 90 days, allowing foreign-flagged vessels to transport oil and other commodities between U.S. ports.

## U.S. and Iran exchange biggest attack on shipping

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the U.S. and Iran exchanged the largest wave of attacks on shipping since the war began. Iran said it attacked 10 ships, including two U.S. vessels, near the Strait of Hormuz after the U.S. destroyed five Iranian oil tankers. Iran also launched missiles at a base hosting U.S. forces in Jordan, which U.S. officials [reportedly](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/09/09/us/politics/iran-strikes-jordan-base.html) said resulted in limited damage and no casualties.

The U.S. said its tanker strikes were retaliation for two Iranian attempts to hit a U.S. Navy warship.

The latest exchange came after [days of escalating attacks](https://time.com/article/2026/09/02/us-iran-deadly-strikes-attacks-civilians-sirik-strait-hormuz/). U.S. forces struck Iranian military sites on Sept. 1 in retaliation for attempted Iranian attacks on commercial vessels and U.S. personnel, CENTCOM said. One U.S. strike hit a wedding party in southern Iran, killing at least five people and injuring more than 60 others, according to Iranian officials, and [prompting an internal investigation](https://time.com/article/2026/09/04/did-the-u-s-strike-an-iranian-wedding-/) by the U.S. military. On Saturday, Iran fired ballistic missiles at a U.S. aircraft carrier and destroyer. In response, the U.S. destroyed three Iranian oil tankers.

Trump officials have downplayed the nature of the conflict, despite the continued fighting. Last week, Vice President J.D. Vance [said](https://time.com/article/2026/09/03/vance-iran-war-press-briefing/) he would not call the recent flare up “a war.”

## When will the war end?

Trump and his officials initially estimated that the war would last four to six weeks, and have repeatedly said that [energy costs will fall quickly](https://time.com/7383152/iran-israel-us-crude-oil-prices-outlook-markets-trump-hormuz/) once the war is over. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested in July that gas prices could return to $3 a gallon by Labor Day.

But Iran’s [hold on the Strait of Hormuz](https://time.com/article/2026/07/12/what-is-the-status-of-the-strait-of-hormuz-/), a [critical artery](https://time.com/7296861/strait-of-hormuz-function-iran-closure-threat-impact-trade/) in the Persian Gulf through which a fifth of the world’s oil trade flowed before the war, has [proved an enduring strategy](https://time.com/article/2026/04/07/strait-of-hormuz-countries-pass-deals-iran-us-war-trump/) to [disrupt the global economy](https://time.com/article/2026/04/15/imf-global-recession-war-us-israel-iran-energy-hormuz/). Iran militarized the Strait at the start of the war in retaliation against U.S. and Israeli strikes on Feb. 28\. Iranian leaders have used the Strait as a [key point of leverage](https://time.com/article/2026/08/18/us-iran-oman-war-peace-deal-strait-hormuz-trump/) in [now-stalled](https://time.com/article/2026/09/01/irans-president-willing-to-resume-peace-talks-what-stands-in-the-way-/) talks with the U.S., and [restarted strikes on ships](https://time.com/article/2026/06/26/strait-hormuz-iran-strike-vessel-un-escort-shipping-oil-trump/) in the waterway in an attempt to force the U.S. to [agree to its demands](https://time.com/article/2026/08/10/iran-us-strait-of-hormuz-conditions-trump-negotiations/).

Trump, however, has maintained that he is under no pressure from the economic pain or its potential impact on the midterm elections to strike a deal with Iran, especially one that would be unfavorable to the U.S.

“A negotiation could possibly happen, but it’s not something we’re looking at,” Trump said on Wednesday.

Trump has insisted that Americans understand the need to continue the war until the U.S. eliminates the possibility of Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon.

“I think it’s very easy to explain to America, all you have to do is say: ‘Will you let Iran have a nuclear weapon?’ And the answer is no,” Trump said.

Nevertheless, the public has [grown increasingly weary](https://time.com/article/2026/06/25/us-iran-deal-mou-trump-approval-war-polls/) of the war. Just 31% of Americans said they supported U.S. strikes on Iran in a late August [Reuters/Ipsos poll](https://www.ipsos.com/sites/default/files/ct/news/documents/2026-08/Reuters%20Ipsos%20August%20Core%20Political%20Topline.pdf), while 63% opposed it. And 83% of those polled said they expect U.S. military involvement in Iran to continue for an extended period of time. Americans also appear to be concerned with the economic consequences of the war, with 61% of respondents believing the conflict has made life more expensive for their families, according to a [Politico poll](https://subscriber.politicopro.com/article/2026/08/august-2026-politico-poll-results-on-affordability-trumps-record-and-immigration-01054160) in August.

Last month, the Treasury Department launched an [economic pressure campaign](https://time.com/article/2026/08/29/iran-escalation-trump-economic-war/) on Iran in an effort to force its capitulation. Its measures have included a [slate of new sanctions](https://time.com/article/2026/08/20/iran-hits-back-at-trump-s-threat-of-a-crushing-economic-d-day-campaign/) on Iran, the ongoing [U.S. naval blockade](https://time.com/article/2026/04/12/trump-blockade-strait-of-hormuz-iran/) on Iranian ports, and the threat of secondary sanctions on Iran’s trading partners.

Iran’s economy has been hit hard by the measures, as well as [disruptions and damage from the war](https://time.com/article/2026/06/21/the-toll-of-the-u-s--iran-war-by-the-numbers/). Its already weak currency has [spiraled to record lows](https://time.com/article/2026/08/24/iranian-rial-hits-record-low-new-us-sanctions/), while inflation, unemployment, and shortages of essential goods have substantially worsened.

Nevertheless, recent intelligence assessments [reportedly](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/09/04/us/politics/iran-war-intelligence-reports.html) indicate that Tehran is prepared to continue fighting for months despite severe economic pressure. Iranian leaders have also [signaled a willingness](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/09/09/world/middleeast/iran-war-us-aggression-hormuz.html) to [escalate the war by intensifying attacks](https://time.com/article/2026/09/08/iran-us-war-strait-of-hormuz-gulf-targets/?amp=true) on U.S. warships, targeting commercial vessels, and expanding shipping restrictions beyond the Strait of Hormuz.

Analysts have argued that Iran’s leadership might be hoping to inflict greater political and economic costs on the U.S. Administration in an effort to increase its leverage over Washington. Trump advisers, including Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have [reportedly](https://www.wsj.com/world/middle-east/trumps-top-advisers-confront-possibility-that-iran-war-lasts-through-end-of-term-5f4e23d7) discussed with Trump the prospect that the war continues through the remainder of his presidential term.
