Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!” the President[ said](https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/117202132375758936) Wednesday. Trump floated the idea a day after the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) [launched](https://x.com/CENTCOM/status/2094916573920199143) a new wave of strikes against Iranian military targets. The U.S. military said it struck air defense sites, radar systems, maritime assets and facilities, mine laying capabilities, and communications sites linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday released a [statement](https://x.com/Iran%5Fin%5FIndia/status/2095161585698484734) insisting the U.S. had attacked civilian areas and service infrastructure in the provinces of Khuzestan, Sistan and Baluchestan, Hormozgan, and Kerman. It said a wedding ceremony in Kuhestak, Sirik County, had been struck, resulting in fatalities and injuries. In a statement to TIME, CENTCOM spokesperson Navy Captain Tim Hawkins said: “We are aware of reports, which originated from Iranian state media. The U.S. military never targets civilians, unlike the IRGC.” The IRGC said it had [launched](https://t.me/irna%5F1313/447023) retaliatory strikes on U.S. bases in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain, alongside an additional U.S. facility in Iraq, overnight Tuesday. The renewed hostilities and threats come after a roughly month-long pause in active hostilities between the two countries. On Sunday, the U.S. military [struck two Iranian launchers](https://time.com/article/2026/08/31/us-iran-strikes-larak-island/) on Larak Island it said were preparing to fire rockets carrying naval mines into the Strait. Trump’s attempt to rename the Strait underscores how both Iran and the U.S. have continued to vie for control of the vital waterway, through which roughly a fifth of global oil transited before the war. The President has previously turned to name changes as a show of power and a way to undermine his perceived adversaries, most recently renaming[ Lake Ontario as “Lake America”](https://time.com/article/2026/08/27/trump-lake-ontario-america-order-canadians-boycott-us-travel-trade-war/) during the [U.S. trade war with Canada](https://time.com/article/2026/08/24/-we-don-t-need-canada-trump-escalates-trade-war-with-threat-of-50-auto-tariffs/). Meanwhile, although Trump has claimed the U.S. has near total control of the Strait, the tussle over the body of water—which reignited after both countries adopted different interpretations of the [Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)](https://time.com/article/2026/06/17/us-iran-peace-deal-agreement-leaked-draft-text/)—rages on. With no clear path to a negotiated truce, Washington has doubled down on its “economic D-Day” threats against Tehran, [increasing the pressure](https://time.com/article/2026/08/20/iran-hits-back-at-trump-s-threat-of-a-crushing-economic-d-day-campaign/) by tightening sanctions in addition to military action. ### Traffic falls once more amid renewed instability for the Strait of Hormuz The latest round of strikes between the U.S. and Iran has further disrupted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Kpler, a commodities data and analytics firm, shared data with TIME that shows only six ships crossed the Strait on Tuesday—a drop from 19 vessels on Friday last week. Before the Iran war began on Feb. 28,[ 138 vessels](https://www.ukmto.org/-/media/ukmto/products/update-008---jmic-advisory-note-08%5Fmar%5F2026%5Ffinal.pdf?rev=2b8c9ce801d34ff790337efd2938a76e) typically passed through the vital trade waterway during a 24-hour period. On Wednesday, U.K. Maritime Operations (UKMTO)[ reported](https://x.com/UK%5FMTO/status/2095113714068255219) an attack on a tanker transiting the Strait that resulted in two casualties. Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry [reported](https://x.com/KSAmofaEN/status/2095134599181426865) that Iran had targeted a Saudi tanker in the waterway, with UKMTO later [stating that](https://x.com/UK%5FMTO/status/2095170206117101596) two crew members had been killed. ### Iran's Gulf neighbors condemn Tehran's “heinous” retaliatory attacks The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) described Iran’s overnight retaliatory strikes against U.S. bases in the region as a “heinous” act. Secretary General Jasem Mohamed AlBudaiwi [said](https://www.gcc-sg.org/en/MediaCenter/News/Pages/news-2026-9-2-4.aspx) "these Iranian attacks represent a blatant violation of state sovereignty and a direct threat to their security and stability." He stated that the GCC stands “firmly alongside” these countries “in all measures and actions taken to preserve their sovereignty, protect their security and stability, and ensure the safety of their peoples and residents.” The council is made up of six countries on the Arabian Peninsula: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
