Severe flooding was reported across the districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Gorkha, north of the[ Nepalese](https://time.com/tag/nepal/) capital Kathmandu early Wednesday. Much of the flooding occurred along the Trishuli and Bhotekoshi rivers in the north of the country. The Nepali tourism board [said](https://x.com/nepaltourismb/status/2092948622694654369) that, based on records from travel and trekking firms, 667 travelers are still out of contact. More than a hundred of those are Indian nationals who were on pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet, a Nepali tourism official is quoted as telling the [Associated Press.](https://apnews.com/article/climate-change-nepal-flash-floods-7262dac22e31258955efa5c28c8fe917) India’s Foreign Ministry [said](https://x.com/MEAIndia/status/2092967245551214768) Thursday it has not been able to establish contact with at least 285 Indian nationals in the wake of the floods. 54 Indian nationals have been rescued, the Ministry confirmed. Thursday’s count from the tourism board shows 65 missing travelers are from the U.S. Among the others still unaccounted for are foreign nationals from Canada, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Australia, Japan, and Singapore. The U.S. embassy in Nepal[ issued](https://x.com/USEmbassyNepal/status/2092568764487242098) a warning to U.S. citizens in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Chitwan, and Tanahun, urging them to “stay away from riverbanks and low-lying areas, seek higher ground, and follow local instructions.” The embassy is "working to account for U.S. citizens who may have been affected by the Rasuwa flooding." Speaking from the Oval Office on Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump [said](https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=905420162249024) of the tragedy: "It's terrible. We've called Nepal; we've offered any help that they need... We're sending aid." The U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker [relayed](https://x.com/MofaNepal/status/2092985491931197538) similar sentiments during a phone call with Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal. Elsewhere, following a visit to one of the sites affected by the floods in Bidur, Nuwakot, Nepali Prime Minister Balendra Shah [called](https://www.facebook.com/OPMCMNP/posts/994275333637508?ref=embed%5Fpost) a high-level meeting with senior government ministers to discuss ongoing rescue and relief efforts. The Prime Minister’s Office said that Shah gave “strict directions to speed up rescue operations in flood affected areas, arrange free and effective treatment to the injured, and immediate relief materials to the displaced families.” ## What do we know about the floods? It remains unclear what caused the floods, but Nepal is highly vulnerable to the climate crisis. The U.S. Geological Survey [reported](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us7000tbwb/executive) initial shaking as an earthquake, though it later determined that the tremors were caused by “a glacial collapse and debris flow that caused subsequent catastrophic impacts downstream.” That event generated seismic energy equivalent to a 5.2-magnitude quake. The [Kathmandu Post](https://kathmandupost.com/national/2026/08/26/nepal-flash-flood-kills-at-least-95-leaves-nearly-400-missing-including-foreign-tourists) reported, citing the country’s national disaster authority, that an initial analysis of satellite imagery from Planet Labs indicated that an avalanche of ice and rock triggered the flood in the Lhende River, about 20 km (12 mi) north-east of the Rasuwagadhi border crossing between China and Nepal. Nepal has thousands of glaciers, but with the Himalayan region warming, many of them are melting. There are also concerns of further flooding, as Nepal’s disaster authority issued a warning on Thursday that a lake formed by debris blocking a ​river at the flood site was rising and [is at risk of bursting](https://x.com/NDRRMA%5FNepal/status/2092936463176630632). Rain is [expected](https://dhm.gov.np/mfd/#/weather/three-days-bulletin) across Nepal in the coming days, further elevating the risk factor. The country sees about [80%](https://ntb.gov.np/plan-your-trip/about-nepal/climate) of its annual rainfall during the ongoing monsoon season, which runs from June through to September. ## How Nepal is responding to the crisis Data from the disaster risk reduction agency also showed that of the more than 900 missing, 28 are Nepali police, 44 are from the Nepali Army, and 13 are from its specialized paramilitary Armed Police Force. Over [4,300](https://www.facebook.com/NepalPolicePHQ/posts/1382046024057917?ref=embed%5Fpost) police personnel have been deployed to assist in rescue efforts. Nepali Police [published details](https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=1381737060755480&set=pcb.1381738154088704) of 66 people hospitalized due to injuries from the flooding, most of whom are from the Nuwakot and Rasuwa regions. Video shared by police showed catastrophic flooding, with entire buildings swept away in the powerful currents. Other footage shared shows a bridge and multiple buildings on the banks of the Trishuli River destroyed in the flooding. Officials have since confirmed that [32](https://english.ratopati.com/story/76587/flood-damage-32-bridges-destroyed-in-rasuwa-nuwakot-and-dhading-with-list) bridges and nearly 40 km of road were swept away. The flooding also resulted in widespread casualties at the border between Nepal and China’s Tibet region. A mudslide occurred near the Gyirong checkpoint on the border, resulting in at least three deaths and more than 550 people missing in Gyirong County, according to Chinese[ state media](https://www.news.cn/20260827/2ae9951c9d1a4f93b9b4fe98375f2df6/c.html). Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered “all-out efforts” for search and rescue operations in response to the mudslide, Chinese media reported. The impact on lives, livelihoods, buildings, infrastructure, bridges, hydroelectric projects, power generation is really immense, and I think we are still coming to grips with the extent of the damage. It is again highlighted how fragile mountain ecosystems are, and how challenging it is to set up early warning systems in mountain environments where you are not predicting one hazard, but you're predicting a range of cascading hazards.
