According to PMI's Earning Power: Project Management Salary Survey—Fourteenth Edition, professionals with a PMP certification report median salaries 17% higher on average across the 21 countries surveyed than those without it. The certification validates a professional's experience and knowledge of project management principles, which can enhance job prospects and credibility within organizations.

#### What are the best certifications for project managers?

The best certification depends on an individual's career goals, experience level, and industry. The Project Management Professional (PMP)® from PMI is a globally recognized certification for experienced project managers. For those newer to the field, PMI's Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® is a common starting point. Other notable certifications include those focused on agile methodologies, such as the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)®, and program management certifications like the Program Management Professional (PgMP)®. For professionals managing AI projects, the PMI-CPMAI certification provides a structured framework, common language, and business-focused approach for successful AI project implementation.

#### How does PMI support career growth for professionals?

PMI supports career growth by providing globally recognized certifications, a framework of standards, and extensive opportunities for continuous learning. Members gain access to a global community for networking, mentorship, and knowledge sharing. #### What is the PMBOK® Guide?

The PMBOK® Guide, or A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, is PMI’s foundational guide to generally accepted project management knowledge and practice. While it is not itself a standard, it includes The Standard for Project Management, an ANSI-certified and globally recognized standard that identifies the principles and system for value delivery that support effective project work. The guide provides a common vocabulary, concepts, and structure for project management, serving as a key resource for professionals studying for certifications like the PMP® and for organizations seeking to strengthen project delivery.

#### How is AI changing project management?

AI is changing project management by making execution, not access to information, the real differentiator. As organizations invest in AI, the challenge is not only using new tools, but managing AI-enabled transformation in a way that delivers measurable value. Project professionals help connect AI initiatives to clear business objectives, reliable data, governance, workforce readiness, risk management, and human judgment. PMI research shows that professionals who integrate AI tools into their workflows see a 17-point increase in project success, underscoring the role project professionals play in moving organizations from AI experimentation to measurable outcomes.

#### What are the most important skills for a project manager?

Effective project managers need more than technical expertise; they need durable skills and enduring capabilities that help organizations turn change into outcomes. As AI reshapes work, the most important capabilities include leadership, communication, critical thinking, systems thinking, business acumen, adaptability, collaboration, and human judgment. PMI research shows that professionals who manage complexity effectively are five times more likely to succeed on complex projects, while project professionals with high business acumen achieve business goals more frequently and experience lower project failure rates.

#### How can I get involved with the PMI community?

Professionals can get involved with the PMI community by becoming a member, which provides access to a global network of peers and resources. Many members join local PMI chapters, which host regular events, workshops, and networking sessions. Online, PMI's projectmanagement.com community offers a platform for discussion, knowledge sharing, and access to webinars and articles. Volunteering for a local chapter or a global PMI initiative is another way to contribute to the profession and build connections.

#### What is the difference between PMP and CAPM?

The CAPM is an entry-level certification designed for individuals with little or no project experience, validating their understanding of fundamental project management knowledge and terminology. The PMP is for experienced project managers and requires a combination of formal education and years of documented project leadership experience, making it a more advanced and globally recognized certification.

#### How does PMI support social impact?
PMI supports social impact by helping individuals, nonprofits, NGOs, and communities use project management to turn purpose into measurable outcomes. Through the PMI Educational Foundation, PMI expands access to project management education for youth worldwide, including underserved and underrepresented populations. More than 300,000 people were evacuated and at least one person killed because of wildfires in France and Spain, with fire crews battling the blazes for several days.

The two countries are facing massive wildfires that began last week amid [successive heat waves in Europe](https://time.com/article/2026/06/23/heatwave-europe-record-high-temperatures-deadly-extreme-heat-stress-safety/) that produced record high temperatures in several countries and led to [thousands of excess deaths](https://phys.org/news/2026-07-excess-deaths-europe-june.html).

**Read More:** [_Europe's Heat Wave Fuels Fears of a Record-Hot Year_](https://time.com/partner-content/prediction-markets/europe-s-heat-wave-fuels-fears-of-a-record-hot-year/)

In France, a major fire broke out in Saumos in Gironde last Wednesday, and a separate fire began near Biscarrosse in the Landes department the next day. Several fires broke out in Spain last Wednesday, including one in Toledo that spread into Madrid’s Villa del Prado and another in Ávila. Fires in Madrid, Castellón, and Manises broke out in the following days.

Both countries had already faced deadly wildfires earlier in the summer.

Here’s what to know about the wildfires affecting France and Spain.

## What has been the impact?

Fire crews were dealing with a 280-km perimeter of fire covering 77,000 hectares across Madrid, Ávila, and Toledo, Spain’s Secretary-General for Civil Protection and Emergencies Virginia Barcones told state broadcaster TVE.

The Spanish regions of Madrid, Ávila, and Valencia were among the worst affected areas. The government declared a national emergency in Madrid and Ávila on Thursday evening, extending it to Toledo on Saturday. It was Spain’s first such declaration over wildfires and only the second overall, after the nationwide blackout in April 2025\. The government deployed 1,200 and 400 vehicles to fight the fires in Madrid and Ávila, respectively. At least 37 sections of road were closed to traffic on Sunday morning because of fires across seven provinces or regions.

Spain recorded its first death from the latest wildfires on Saturday when a 78-year-old man was killed in a fire in Manises, near Valencia. The victim, who [reportedly](https://www.rtve.es/noticias/20260725/muere-hombre-atrapado-coche-incendio-forestal-manises/17169151.shtml) had reduced mobility, was found dead in his car.

Several major fronts of the wildfires affecting Madrid and Ávila were contained by Sunday morning, according to Spain’s Military Emergencies Unit, although the fires remained active. The wildfire risk also remained high in the eastern and southern parts of the country, according to Spain’s meteorological agency, Aemet. That risk is expected to go up in the coming days as the temperature warms this week, Aemet said.

In France, around 55,000 people were ordered to evacuate villages near Bordeaux, including Le Barp, Marcheprime, Biganos, Mios, and Cestas, overnight on Saturday. In total, more than 250,000 people in southwestern France were forced to evacuate in recent days.

In Gironde, at least 240 homes were destroyed as of Sunday, officials said. The fire spread to within 15 km from the edge of Bordeaux’s metropolitan area and around 25 to 30 km from the city center. Bordeaux officials said they are evaluating the situation but that there are no immediate plans to evacuate the city.

Wildfires in France have also [disrupted the Tour de France](https://time.com/article/2026/07/26/wildfire-disruptions-to-the-tour-de-france-show-how-climate-change-is-shaping-sports/), as organizers [shortened its final stage](https://time.com/article/2026/07/21/europe-extreme-heat-tour-de-france/) from [133 km to 89 km](https://www.letour.fr/en/news/2026/change-to-the-route-of-the-final-stage-1/1355402) so security personnel can be redeployed to affected areas.

France’s meteorological agency warned that wildfire danger remained high across many departments despite a slight improvement over the weekend, especially as another heat wave is expected to worsen fire conditions in the coming days.

## How is climate change exacerbating wildfire risks?

Much of Europe has been affected by successive heat waves that have raised the risk of wildfires. With temperatures expected to rise again and little rain forecast in many fire-affected areas, that danger is only expected to increase this week.

Global warming has made heat waves more prevalent and more intense, with Europe warming at twice the global average rate since the 1980s. The extreme heat increases evaporation and plant water loss, worsening drought and drying out vegetation which creates more fuel for wildfires.

Spain recorded 32 major forest fires so far this year. That’s a significant increase from last year, when the country recorded seven over the same time period.

“I’d once again like to urge people to take utmost care and to stay up to date,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Sunday. “The Iberian Peninsula is suffering the effects of the climate emergency.”

Heat waves also make it more difficult to contain fires, French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez told [_La Tribune Dimanche_](https://www.latribune.fr/article/la-tribune-dimanche/politique/12689058310873/laurent-nunez-ministre-de-linterieur-le-feu-sera-long-a-combattre) on Sunday. Dry weather, high temperatures, and dense ground vegetation make the fires spread rapidly once they begin.

Earlier this month, other deadly wildfires struck France and Spain. At least 13 people were killed in the Los Gallardos fire in southern Spain and a 22-year-old volunteer firefighter died while battling a vegetation fire in Savoie, France.

## How to stay safe

People in affected areas should follow official instructions and evacuate immediately if ordered.
