Waxman Staff Writer Jul 22, 2026 2:47 PM UTC On June 1, 2016, Ian and Angela Diaz approached local authorities in Anaheim, Calif. to report a case of [online harassment](https://time.com/3305466/male-female-harassment-online/) that seemed to have a clear culprit. For weeks, Angela had been receiving emails from the address “Lilith is Truth.” In some folklore stories, Lilith is a woman who ran away from Adam in the Garden of Eden to live a more independent life. These emails called Angela a “sinner” and included statements like “Ian does not love you” and “you have stolen my life.” Ian and Angela told police they believed “Lilith Is Truth” was really his ex, Michelle Hadley, saying the religious language and references to Lilith in the emails matched what she had written to Ian in the past. Later that month, Angela accused Michelle of posting photos of her in online ads soliciting men to rape her in Ian’s condo to fulfill a sexual fantasy. She [told police](https://ocdistrictattorney.gov/press/remarks-by-the-district-attorney-on-charges-against-angela-diaz-and-exoneration-of-michelle-hadley/) that men had come to her home in response to the ads and claimed that on one occasion, a man had attempted to attack her in her garage. That July, police arrested Michelle on felony counts of stalking and attempted rape, among other charges. Michelle spent nearly three months in jail until authorities realized that she hadn’t been involved in the [harassment](https://time.com/3531310/gender-online-harassment/) at all. After tracing the IP address for “Lilith is Truth,” they found that all of it—the emails, the ads—had actually come from Ian and Angela’s home. This strange and layered case is the subject of the [documentary,](https://time.com/7019618/essential-true-crime-documentaries/) _A Toxic Love Story,_ out July 22 on [Netflix](https://time.com/5951774/new-documentaries-streaming/), which recounts the events that led to uncovering Ian and Angela as the true sources of the harassment. A former U.S. marshal, Diaz was [sentenced](https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/former-deputy-us-marshal-sentenced-cyberstalking-perjury-and-obstruction) to 10 years in prison in 2023, for [framing](https://time.com/4630876/rape-fantasy-hoax/) Michelle to make it seem like she was going to harm his then-wife, Angela. Authorities first connected Angela to the emails, and in 2017, she was sentenced to five years in prison for framing Michelle. Neither Ian nor Angela participated in the documentary. _A Toxic Love Story_ provides a timeline of the case using police interviews, bodycam footage, texts of the harassing emails, and interviews with Michelle Hadley. Courtesy of Netflix ## Tracing the harassing emails In 2016, Angela and Ian were living together in a condo that Ian had owned with his ex-girlfriend Michelle. They told police that she would be the most logical sender of the [emails](https://time.com/4579785/internet-users-harassment-study/), painting her as a jilted lover. But in the documentary, Michelle says she had been over him for a while. Michelle and Ian met in 2013, but she left him after two years because she said he became too controlling and tried to force his sexual fantasies onto her, like demanding she have [sex](https://time.com/4811561/revenge-porn/) with a stranger on camera. Shortly after Michelle left him, Ian met Angela on a dating site, and they married in 2016\. Though it had been years since Michelle sent Ian the religious emails referencing Lilith when she was at her angriest after their breakup, they resembled the 2016 emails so much that she was arrested, accused of arranging for someone to come to the condo to [rape](https://time.com/4542245/poldark-bbc-sex-scene-rape-fantasy/) Angela. Michelle spent 88 days in prison before authorities traced the IP addresses from the emails back to her old condo, where she no longer lived. As the Washington Post [reported](https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/01/10/woman-arrested-for-craigslist-rape-fantasy-plot-was-framed-in-a-diabolical-scheme-da-says/) in 2017, authorities linked the emails to Angela, saying she sent them from the condo where she was living with Ian, her cellphone, and her father’s home in Arizona. In 2017, Angela pleaded guilty to charges including false imprisonment, falsely reporting crimes, and kidnapping—based on her attempt to send Michelle to prison. Michelle was completely exonerated of all charges. It would be another four years until federal authorities discovered Angela had a co-conspirator: her own husband. ## How Ian Diaz got caught While the case started out with the Anaheim police department, the [Department of Justice](https://time.com/5783007/donald-trump-doj-resignations/) (DOJ) did their own investigation of the case because it involved a U.S. Marshal. While Michelle was in prison, DOJ special agent Jason Higley examined police body cam footage and noticed that Ian sounded anxious and appeared to be coaching Angela on what to tell police. In backups of Ian’s government-issued laptop, Higley found Ian’s personal email linked to correspondence between Lilith and the man who responded to the [Craigslist](https://time.com/7799/craigslist-killer-satanic-cult/) rape fantasy ad. Higley found fragments of “Lilith is Truth” emails on the laptop, proving that Ian was behind these messages too. “Michelle admits that she did send a couple religious emails with mention of Lilith,” says _A Toxic Love Story_ director Alexandra Lacey, “And either Ian or Angela—and we'll never know who exactly did what—drew on that and was able to then create these hundreds of emails from this character called Lilith." In 2021, Ian was [arrested](https://oig.justice.gov/news/press-release/deputy-us-marshal-indicted-and-arrested-conspiracy-cyber-stalking-and-perjury), and in 2023, he was convicted of cyberstalking, perjury, and obstruction of a federal matter and sentenced to 10 years in prison.  Angela and Ian Diaz, as pictured in Netflix's A Toxic Love Story Courtesy of Netflix ## The mystery of Ian Diaz’s motivation Why Ian wrote these emails, and why he harbored so much [animus](https://time.com/article/2026/07/13/how-livestreamed-child-abuse-is-challenging-how-we-think-about-online-privacy/) towards his ex-girlfriend, is unclear. “We will never know exactly what happened in the condo," Higley says in the documentary, arguing that only Ian and Angela know and “they’re not reliable witnesses.” However, Higley believes that Ian craved control: “It boils down to Ian wanting to control someone. He wanted to control Michelle, and she got away. And that made him angry, so he designed this scheme to frame his ex-girlfriend.” Michelle explains that shortly after she and Ian bought a condo together, he installed security cameras so he could watch her in the kitchen. Whenever she was outside of the house, he’d repeatedly call her, asking where she was and what she was doing. He also tried to change the way she looked, picking her outfits, plus making her wear fake nails and pierce her bellybutton. Michelle sued the Anaheim police department in 2021, arguing that the department didn’t prepare officers to adequately investigate the case, according to [Courthouse News](https://www.courthousenews.com/anaheim-settles-lawsuit-by-woman-framed-in-rape-fantasy-case/). “I’m on the other side of that journey,” Michelle says in _A Toxic Love Story_. She gets the final word at the end of the documentary, talking about how she’s rebuilt her life as a mom of a young daughter, born the same day Ian was convicted. “Raising this beautiful little girl is my fairy tale ending.
