Earlier this year, he faced tough questioning over his decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the U.S., after newly-released government files showed he was[ warned of the “reputational risks”](https://time.com/article/2026/03/11/starmer-appointment-mandelson-files-epstein-relationship-risk-warning/) over Mandelson’s ties to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
