Israeli Prime Minister [Benjamin Netanyahu](https://time.com/7008717/benjamin-netanyahu-interview/) on Monday afternoon said his country would hold off on further strikes against Iran, providing the fire is contained on both sides.

If "Iran makes the mistake of resuming attacks on us, we will respond with overwhelming force," he said in a [televised address](https://x.com/IsraeliPM/status/2064031576519045372), emphasizing Israel’s right to “self-defense.”

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) [had earlier signaled](https://t.me/farsna/440713), via a statement carried by the semi-official Fars news agency, that it had halted its fire against Israel.

Both sides retreated after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly demanded that they “[must immediately stop shooting](https://time.com/article/2026/06/08/trump-demands-israel-iran-halt-fire-world-leaders-concern-renewed-strikes/).”

"Final negotiations on ‘peace’ are proceeding, subject to ignorance or stupidity getting in its way,” Trump said via Truth Social.

The renewed fighting between Israel and Iran marked the worst exchanges of fire since the cease-fire came into place in April.

[World leaders were united](https://time.com/article/2026/06/08/trump-demands-israel-iran-halt-fire-world-leaders-concern-renewed-strikes/) in their condemnation of the fresh hostilities, urging for restraint and an immediate return to negotiations.

On Monday morning, Iranian state media said that Iran had launched a new wave of missiles towards Israel. Earlier, Israel bombed Iranian cities—with explosions heard in Tehran, Tabriz, and Isfahan—as well as an Iranian petrochemical plant in Bandar-e Mahshar after intercepting a wave of ballistic missiles from Iran on Sunday night.

Iran had claimed that the missiles were a warning to Israel to halt its [attacks on Lebanon](https://time.com/article/2026/06/04/hezbollah-rejects-israel-lebanon-ceasefire-agreement-strikes/), which have continued despite a cease-fire being announced last week. Israel’s decision to retaliate against Iran may have contradicted the advice of Trump, who had [reportedly](https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/07/world/live-news/iran-war-trump-israel-lebanon?post-id=cmq4hkmbe00023b6rjxquih38) told Netanyahu to hold off on an attack in hopes of reaching a [U.S.-Iran deal](https://time.com/article/2026/06/01/us-iran-trade-fresh-strikes-peace-talks-president-trump-warning/).

The renewed conflict appeared to widen before settling, with the Iran-backed [Houthi rebels](https://time.com/article/2026/03/28/iran-war-news-houthis-israel/) claiming responsibility for missiles fired at Israel from Yemen, which were intercepted.

The Houthis declared on Monday a “complete and total ban on Israeli maritime navigation in the Red Sea.” The Houthis had [targeted commercial ships](https://time.com/6548183/yemen-houthi-rebels-red-sea-attacks-impact/) in the Red Sea in late 2023 and 2024 in retaliation for Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. If the Houthis resume attacks in the waterway, it could mean even more [disruptions](https://time.com/article/2026/05/22/how-trump-s-war-with-iran-is-giving-somali-pirates-an-opening/) to [global shipping](https://time.com/article/2026/04/08/bab-el-mandeb-strait-iran-houthis-threat-trade-hormuz-war-ceasefire/), exacerbating already [higher prices](https://time.com/article/2026/05/13/trump-economy-financial-concerns-us-pentagon-iran-war-cost/) of energy and other commodities due to the war.

While the U.S. and Iran have [exchanged low-level attacks](https://time.com/article/2026/05/08/us-iran-war-strait-hormuz-attacks-cease-fire-trump-deal/) since the cease-fire, both sides have continued to participate in [negotiations toward ending the war](https://time.com/article/2026/05/11/us-iran-israel-war-trump-netanyahu-peace-talks-latest/) and finding a consensus around Iran’s nuclear program. Israel’s attacks on Iran, however, are a significant test for Trump, who has sought for weeks to [wind down](https://time.com/article/2026/05/07/us-iran-war-deal-mou-axios-report-negotiations-strait-nuclear/) U.S. engagement in the war.


In an interview with the [_Financial Times_](https://www.ft.com/content/a0ce59f9-fbde-49e8-9158-fba3d4079859?syn-25a6b1a6=1) late Sunday, after Iran had fired missiles at Israel, Trump said that Israel will have no choice but to accept any deal that the U.S. negotiates with Iran.

“He won’t have any choice,” the U.S. President told the _FT_, referring to Netanyahu. “I call the shots. I call all the shots. He doesn’t call the shots,” Trump insisted—a claim challenged, however, by the subsequent attacks and Netanyahu’s renewed insistence that Israel will respond if challenged once more.

## Netanyahu tests Trump

Experts previously told TIME that the U.S. may be concerned about the longevity of any deal under the potential threat of new attacks from Israel. Israel has said that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon, while Iran has maintained that its nuclear program is only for civilian purposes.

Experts also stressed there is precedent for Israel attacking Iran if it feels dissatisfied by U.S.-Iran negotiations. Last June, Israel [attacked](https://time.com/7293839/iran-retaliation-israel-attack-what-to-know/) Iran in the midst of [U.S.-Iran nuclear negotiations](https://time.com/7287313/iran-israel-strike-report-nuclear-us-trump-history-context-explainer/), eventually [drawing the U.S. into a bombing campaign](https://time.com/7296469/u-s-strikes-iran-nuclear-trump-war/) on Iranian nuclear facilities before reaching a [Trump-brokered cease-fire](https://time.com/7297098/israel-iran-ceasefire-broken-missile-strikes-tehran/). The [U.S.-Israel strikes](https://time.com/7382631/iran-israel-us-war-explainer-trump-middle-east/) on Feb. 28 that launched the war had again interrupted ongoing U.S.-Iran nuclear talks. In early March, Secretary of State Marco Rubio [suggested](https://time.com/7382385/iran-war-congress-marco-rubio-rationale/) that Israel may have [pushed the U.S. into the war with Iran](https://time.com/7295726/netanyahu-trump-israel-iran-nuclear-strikes/), though Rubio and Trump later [rejected that](https://time.com/7382322/trump-iran-war-progress-knocked-out-reason-for-strikes/).


Trump appears to have taken steps toward making a possible deal more palatable to Israel. Last month, he told the leaders of several Arab and Muslim nations that he expected them to [sign the Abraham Accords](https://time.com/article/2026/05/26/abraham-accords-trump-peace-deal-us-israel-iran-war/), a set of agreements establishing formal diplomatic relations with Israel, as part of any U.S. deal with Iran. So far, it does not appear that any of the countries that were not already signatories of the accords have accepted the request.

William Figueroa, an assistant professor of international relations at the University of Groningen, previously told TIME that in seeking to attach the Abraham Accords to a U.S.-Iran peace deal, Trump may have hoped that “the prospect of wider normalized relations and economic investment” would discourage Israel from restarting hostilities with Iran.

Israel’s [continued fighting with Hezbollah](https://time.com/article/2026/06/04/hezbollah-rejects-israel-lebanon-ceasefire-agreement-strikes/) in Lebanon has also threatened to derail progress towards a U.S.-Iran deal. President Trump told [Fox News ](https://x.com/TreyYingst/status/2063712724974993674)on Sunday that he was “not happy” about Israel’s decision to strike Hezbollah targets in Beirut earlier in the day.


The U.S. has [brokered multiple cease-fires](https://time.com/article/2026/04/16/israel-lebanon-ceasefire-trump/) between Israel and Lebanon, but Israel has continued to carry out near-daily strikes, including on civilian areas, killing more than 3,500 people since early March according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. Iran has repeatedly objected to Israel’s fighting with Hezbollah and said that a permanent cessation of [Israeli attacks across the region](https://time.com/article/2026/03/16/lebanon-israel-hezbollah-displaced/) is a precondition for any U.S.-Iran deal.

After Israel previously escalated its offensive in Lebanon, Trump reportedly [erupted at Netanyahu over a call](https://time.com/article/2026/06/02/trump-netanyahu-crazy-lebanon-hezbollah-ceasefire-iran-us-peace-deal/) last week. Trump [confirmed](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/trump-confirms-he-called-netanyahu-crazy-phone-call-2026-06-03/) the call had taken place, and said he had been “a little bit perturbed at \[Netanyahu’s\] constantly fighting with ​Lebanon.”

U.S. officials have for weeks suggested that a U.S.-Iran deal is imminent, but both sides appear unwilling to budge on certain key points, including a moratorium on Iran’s nuclear program and its handing over of its uranium stockpile. Iran has also [repeatedly said](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/hormuz-strait-will-be-open-with-transit-fees-iran-envoy-moscow-quoted-2026-06-08/) it intends to continue managing transit through the [Strait of Hormuz](https://time.com/article/2026/03/17/what-is-the-strait-of-hormuz-global-trade-oil-flow-iran-war/), which it militarized at the start of the war, including a possible arrangement with Oman to charge ships fees to sail through its waters. The U.S. has strongly opposed such an arrangement.
