"It’s gonna be a riot. It’s not going to be a celebration. It’s going to be a blackout.” ## **The NYPD is trying to mitigate disturbances** The celebrations seen in the city as the team advanced through the playoffs may be a taste of things to come. The NYPD said it saw “progressively more problematic issues” as the team passed through the series, winning every game. Things culminated with what the NYPD described as a particularly “raucous” celebration outside of Madison Square Garden, where the Knicks play home games. "There were chaotic crowds with physical altercations, people throwing items at each other, including glass bottles, jumping police barriers, climbing light poles and subway structures, blocking vehicular traffic on 7th Avenue, drinking in the streets, among other things,” a New York Police Department (NYPD) spokesperson told TIME about the crowds outside MSG on May 21\. As a result of those celebrations, the NYPD said it “determined that we would not support more watch parties outside of MSG,” and stopped issuing permits for parties outside of the venue for the final game of the playoffs on Monday. Instead, the city appears to be attempting to spread out celebrations by hosting alternative watch events at places like SummerStage, Radio City Music Hall and Brooklyn Bowl. The NYPD has posted large numbers of officers at the locations where these celebration parties have been taking place. Despite the ban on watch parties outside MSG, large numbers gathered after the Knicks completed their sweep of the Cavaliers. “The NYPD took six people into custody and issued summonses for disorderly conduct. Individuals were climbing on light poles and other structures outside the stadium, blocking cars, jumping police barriers, refusing police orders to disperse, public drinking, among other things,” a spokesperson said.
