[Thomas Massie](https://time.com/7296692/thomas-massie-trump-mr-no-contrarian-obbb-iran-primary-campaign/) of Kentucky lost the Republican primary for his seat on Tuesday to a challenger endorsed by [President Donald Trump](https://time.com/article/2026/03/11/trump-massie-republican-primary-kentucky-midterms/), Ed Gallrein, in a victory for Trump that underscores the strength of his [influence over the party](https://time.com/article/2026/05/18/kentucky-thomas-massie-trump-revenge-epstein-files/). “Massie's defeat sends the clearest message yet that the Republican Party is Donald Trump's party,” Steve Voss, a professor of political science at the University of Kentucky, tells TIME. Massie, who has represented Kentucky’s fourth congressional district since 2012, faced what he[ described](https://apnews.com/article/massie-trump-gallrein-kentucky-primary-republican-election-ea4731167f8d7eade91a6b5d612dca9f) as “by far the most challenging” primary of his career as Trump repeatedly levied fierce attacks against him and, in a rare move, even dispatched Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to campaign for Gallrein in the lead-up to Tuesday’s election. Massie emerged as one of Trump’s chief targets in his efforts to[ topple GOP opponents](https://time.com/7358546/trump-midterms-republicans-primaries/) in the primaries ahead of this year’s midterm elections due to the maverick congressman’s frequent breaks with the President on key foreign and domestic issues. Trump called Massie a “horrible congressman” on [X](https://x.com/realDonaldTrump/status/2056827052851105947) while voting was underway Tuesday afternoon, marking his first post on the social media platform since early March. Asked about Massie’s defeat that night, Trump [told reporters](https://x.com/CBSNews/status/2056901340157108537): “He was a bad guy. He deserves to lose.” Massie helped[ lead the push](https://time.com/7334230/epstein-files-vote-thomas-massie/) to force the full release of government files related to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein; he vocally opposed and[ voted against](https://time.com/7299910/big-beautiful-bill-house-trump/) Trump’s signature One Big Beautiful Bill; he has criticized U.S. financial supporting Israel; and he has been a[ staunch opponent](https://time.com/article/2026/03/25/republican-rand-paul-voted-against-iran-war-powers-resolution/) to Trump’s war in Iran. “The more famous Massie became as a Trump antagonist, the louder the statement Trump could make by defeating Massie,” Voss says. “Massie went from a little-known figure prior to the Epstein files to one of the best known figures in Kentucky politics nationwide. And the more prominent Massie became nationally, the more valuable a target he was strategically for Trump to take out.” Trump has had a target on Massie's back for some time, but he redoubled his attacks against the congressmen during the primary race. In March, Trump called Massie “disloyal to the Republican Party” and “disloyal to the people of Kentucky" while speaking in a warehouse in Hebron, at the heart of Kentucky’s fourth district. "And most importantly, he’s disloyal to the United States of America, and he’s got to be voted out of office as soon as possible!” Massie has not cowered in the face of Trump’s assaults, however. Even after losing, Massie took jabs at Trump during his concession speech, insulting the President’s White House ballroom and highlighting the rise in gas prices. Without naming the President directly, he also compared Trump to a bully. “They’ve tried to turn me into a villain. The more they try to punish me, the more powerful I get,” Massie said at an election event on Monday, before his defeat. The primary race was one of the most expensive in the country’s history, with more than $32 million spent on ads, according to AdImpact. Much of the advertising dollars were spent by pro-Israel or Trump-aligned groups in the push to unseat Massie. Voss says that Massie’s district in northern Kentucky had as good a shot as any to overcome Trump’s pressure campaign, as it is not as much of a MAGA stronghold as other districts around the state. “They’re a fairly mobilized, fairly aware, fairly ideological Republican electorate based in suburbs and exurbs, not in the sort of places that Trump brought into the party,” says Voss. “If a Republican cannot survive after resisting Trump in a territory like Northern Kentucky, there aren't many places where a Republican could.” Trump-backed primary candidates have won in other races around the U.S., as well, but Voss says those results have come in more predictable ways that are far less indicative of Trump’s grip on his party compared to Massie’s loss. Trump’s effort to oust another GOP foe, Sen.[ Bill Cassidy](https://time.com/article/2026/05/15/cassidy-louisiana-senate-republican-primary-trump-letlow-fleming/) of Louisiana, met with victory days before the Kentucky primary; Cassidy, who voted to convict Trump during his second impeachment and has been a long-time subject of the President’s anger, on Saturday lost the primary to his seat while Louisiana Rep. Julia Letlow, who was backed by the president, and another candidate advanced to a runoff. Challengers backed by the President also scored notable[ wins](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/may/05/indiana-republicans-donald-trump) earlier this month in state legislative primaries in Indiana, toppling multiple lawmakers who rejected Trump’s push for mid-cycle redistricting. “Cassidy lost in Louisiana, but there was little doubt that Louisiana was Trump-territory,” Voss tells TIME. He adds that the takedown of several Indiana state lawmakers was also “not a horrible surprise” given the political makeup of voters there. “But Massie,” he says, “was running in the sort of district that if any place were going to resist Trump's intervention, it would have been there.” The primary for Massie’s seat challenged many party loyalists who were forced to choose between a long-standing Republican congressman and the clear wishes of the President. Voss contends Trump was able to sway “so-called traditionalist Republicans,” who were loyal to their party but not necessarily a particular candidate, against Massie. “Massie supporters are pretty angry at the Trump Administration, and it's odd to have an ideological base stirred up against the figurehead of their party in this way,” says Voss. House Speaker Mike Johnson, for his part, [told reporters](https://thehill.com/homenews/house/5887412-johnson-massie-kentucky-trump/) on Wednesday that he was “not surprised” by Massie’s defeat. “The President certainly made his opinion known, and I’m not surprised by the results there,” Johnson said, adding that Trump “has the strongest endorsement in the history of politics.” “But we don’t demand loyalty to the President,” he added. “What I demand as Speaker of the House is loyalty to our core principles, the principles of our party, which are the principles of America.” Gallrein is expected to go on to win the general election in the reliably red district in November. The Cook Political Report [rates](https://www.cookpolitical.com/ratings/house-race-ratings) the seat as "Solid Republican," among those deemed the least competitive this year. Gallrein, a farmer and retired Navy SEAL who the President endorsed in October before he entered the race, tied his campaign tightly to Trump and characterized himself as a staunch loyalist.
