The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said [in a post on X](https://x.com/HHSGov/status/2053656580118216985) Sunday night that 17 passengers on board the Dutch-flagged _MV Hondius_ had been airlifted to the U.S., with two of them traveling in biocontainment units out of caution. The department said one of the U.S. passengers had mild symptoms and another “tested mildly PCR positive” for the Andes virus—a type of hantavirus that can cause severe respiratory disease and is the only known type to be transmissible between people. Passengers aboard the _MV Hondius_ began evacuation from the vessel earlier in the day.
