The World Health Organization[ says](https://x.com/WHO/status/2051952287245897925) that to date, there are eight cases of hantavirus infection linked to the _MV Hondius_, which is currently en route to the[ Canary Islands](https://time.com/article/2026/05/06/spanish-islands-refuse-to-take-hantavirus-ship-as-latest-patient-arrives-in-hospital/). Three passengers who boarded the Hondius have died, one of whom was [among five confirmed infected](https://time.com/article/2026/05/07/hantavirus-outbreak-andes-virus-not-covid/). Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO’s director-general, has[ said](https://x.com/drtedros/status/2051961420917465551?s=46) that the overall public health risk from hantavirus remains low, and officials have[ dismissed](https://www.instagram.com/p/DX-XsyJvrJm/) the concern of hantavirus becoming a global pandemic threat like COVID-19\. But investigations continue as the situation grows complex. Nearly 150 passengers and crew members from 23 different nationalities are still on board the ship, while[ several other passengers disembarked](https://english.elpais.com/international/2026-05-06/spanish-passenger-on-the-hondius-there-are-23-people-who-got-off-on-saint-helena-and-have-been-wandering-around.html) before news of the outbreak emerged. Health authorities also confirmed that the hantavirus involved in the outbreak is the Andes strain, the only known strain transmissible between people and has been linked to infections with higher mortality. Here are some of the countries linked to the recent hantavirus outbreak. ## **Argentina** The _MV Hondius_ departed Ushuaia, a city in southern Argentina, on April 1\. One person on board the ship was an Argentine national. Hantavirus is endemic in Argentina, but infections in the country are on the rise. The Argentine health ministry on Tuesday[ reported](https://www.argentina.gob.ar/noticias/actualizacion-del-boletin-epidemiologico-nacional-de-la-semana-ndeg-16) 101 hantavirus infections since June 2025, which is roughly double the caseload recorded over the same period the previous year, per the[ Associated Press](https://apnews.com/article/argentina-hantavirus-cruise-ship-5841c25be9aa6dd3cd6edc81c74609de). While the source of the outbreak hasn’t been determined, the Argentine government has looked into whether the infections stemmed from the country. The[ AP](https://apnews.com/article/argentina-hantavirus-cruise-ship-5841c25be9aa6dd3cd6edc81c74609de) reported, citing two unidentified investigators, that two of the three deaths, involving a married Dutch couple, may have ties to Ushuaia, with officials speculating that the couple contracted the virus during a bird-watching outing in the city that brought them to a landfill where they could have been exposed. ## **Canada** In a press briefing on Thursday, WHO director-general Ghebreyesus [said](https://www.who.int/news-room/speeches/item/who-director-general-s-opening-remarks-at-the-media-briefing---7-may-2026) that passengers from 12 countries—including Canada—had disembarked the _MV Hondius_ at a stop on St. Helena, a British territory in the South Atlantic. The cruise ship’s operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, also [said Thursday](https://oceanwide-expeditions.com/press/press-update-m-v-hondius-7-may-2026-11-30-hrs-cet) that 30 individuals from at least 12 different nationalities disembarked on April 24. Canada’s health minister Marjorie Michel and foreign affairs minister Anita Anand [said](https://x.com/AnitaAnandMP/status/2052406109143486671/photo/1) in a statement that two Canadians aboard the vessel have returned home. Another Canadian, who was not on the vessel, they added, was on the same flight and may have come into contact with a symptomatic case. The three individuals show no symptoms of infection and are self-isolating and being monitored. Canadian authorities are also in contact with the four Canadians still on board the _MV Hondius_. ## **Cabo Verde** The ship intended to dock at the West African archipelagic nation of Cabo Verde, but local authorities denied it from doing so, and the _MV Hondius_ was anchored off the country’s coast for three days. Before setting sail for the Canary Islands on May 6, three people on board the Hondius were evacuated to the Netherlands via medical aircraft for screening and treatment. ## **Denmark** The Danish Patient Safety Authority said in a [statement on Thursday](https://stps.dk/nyheder/2026/maj/dansk-statsborger-har-vaeret-ombord-paa-mv-hondius) that one of its nationals was on the _MV Hondius_. The agency said the person, who is self-isolating, returned to Denmark at the end of April, has displayed no symptoms of illness, and has not been in close contact with any of the people from _MV Hondius_ who later developed an infection. ## **Germany** As of May 4, there were 8 reported German nationals on the _MV Hondius_, including one crew member. Among them was a female passenger who passed after falling ill. On April 24, a German national disembarked at St. Helena. An asymptomatic German was evacuated on May 6, and will[ reportedly be](https://www.reuters.com/world/german-woman-hantavirus-hit-ship-be-tested-german-hospital-bild-reports-2026-05-06/) brought to a hospital in Düsseldorf for testing after having contact with the German who died. ## **The Netherlands** The _MV Hondius_ is a Dutch-flagged ship operated by Oceanwide Expeditions. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a[ Wednesday blog post](https://www.government.nl/latest/weblogs/the-work-of-the-ministry-of-foreign-affairs/2026/medical-evacuation-from-cruise-ship-m-v-hondius) that with the ship sailing under the country’s flag, the Netherlands is coordinating assistance to those on board. According to the operator, 13 people on the ship are Dutch—8 passengers and 5 crew members, though Oceanwide Expeditions said three Dutch nationals also disembarked at St. Helena on April 24. Two Dutch nationals, husband and wife, are among the three reported deaths from the _Hondius_. The woman, who died in South Africa, tested positive for hantavirus. On May 5, Dutch health authorities[ informed the country’s flag carrier KLM Royal Dutch Airlines](https://news.klm.com/passenger-with-hantavirus-was-briefly-on-board-a-klm-aircraft-in-johannesburg/) that the woman had briefly been on board their aircraft in Johannesburg on April 25, and in response, the airline also informed passengers aboard that Netherlands-bound flight. Also among the evacuees on May 6 was a 41-year-old Dutch national, who is reportedly a[ crew member](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/may/05/british-crew-member-dutch-mv-hondius-cruise-ship-hantavirus-cases). ## **The Philippines** _MV Hondius_’ crew has 38 Filipinos, but a spokesperson and undersecretary for the Philippines’ health department said on[ May 5](https://www.rappler.com/philippines/overseas-filipinos/hantavirus-outbreak-mv-hondius-ship-ofw-crew-may-2026/) that none are presently ill and that they are in close coordination with the concerned authorities. ## **Singapore** The Southeast Asian city-state announced on Thursday that it has isolated and is monitoring two of its residents who were aboard _MV Hondius_ in its government facility. Singapore’s Communicable Diseases Agency[ said](https://www.cda.gov.sg/news-and-events/public-health-measures-activated-for-two-singapore-residents-onboard-mv-hondius/) it was notified on May 4 and May 5 that the two residents, aged 67 and 65, were on the ship when it departed Ushuaia in Argentina on April 1\. Both disembarked early and were on the same Johannesburg-bound flight as one of the confirmed hantavirus cases on April 25. “One has a runny nose but is otherwise well, and the other is asymptomatic,” the agency said of the isolated residents. The two individuals’ test results are pending, but the Singaporean agency says the risk to the general public in Singapore is currently low. ## **South Africa** The Dutch woman who died in South Africa first flew in from St. Helena. The WHO said that she deteriorated during her flight to Johannesburg. According to[ South African media](https://www.sanews.gov.za/south-africa/response-hantavirus-case-was-swift-contact-tracing-began-within-hours), she collapsed at the O.R. Tambo International Airport. She died in the hospital on April 26. When she was confirmed infected with hantavirus, South African health officials began contact-tracing efforts. More than 60 people have been identified, and those successfully contacted are being monitored**.** ## **Spain** Thirteen passengers and a crew member aboard the _MV Hondius_ are Spanish. According to the[ country’s health ministry](https://www.sanidad.gob.es/en/gabinete/notasPrensa.do?id=6900), the WHO requested that Spain accept the _MV Hondius_ in the Canary Islands, a Spanish territory, in “accordance with international law and humanitarian principles.” The ministry said that the country has “a moral and legal obligation to assist these people, among whom are several Spanish citizens.” _MV Hondius_ is expected to dock in the Canary Islands in three to four days after departing from Cabo Verde, but the President of the Canary Islands has[ pushed back](https://time.com/article/2026/05/06/spanish-islands-refuse-to-take-hantavirus-ship-as-latest-patient-arrives-in-hospital/), saying he will not allow passengers to disembark, citing potential dangers to the local population. ## **Switzerland** The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health[ announced](https://www.bag.admin.ch/en/newnsb/p--A7yPSfxdBqR0N9kZMC) on May 6 that a man who was on the _MV Hondius_ was infected with the hantavirus and was being treated at the University Hospital Zurich. The patient, who returned to Switzerland after travelling on the cruise ship, tested positive for the Andes strain. His wife, who accompanied him on the trip, has not yet shown any symptoms but is self-isolating as a precaution. ## **United Kingdom** According to Oceanwide Expeditions on May 4, 19 passengers and four crew members on the ship were from Great Britain. Seven British nationals disembarked in St. Helena on April 24. A British passenger who presented a high fever, shortness of breath, and signs of pneumonia was evacuated from Ascension Island to South Africa on April 27, according to the WHO. The passenger was confirmed to have the virus and is in intensive care. Another British national suspected of an infection,[ a crew member](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/may/05/british-crew-member-dutch-mv-hondius-cruise-ship-hantavirus-cases), was among those evacuated from the ship on May 6. Two others have been[ self-isolating](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9wepl8we90o) after leaving the cruise ship when it made a stop at St. Helena. ## **United States** Seventeen of the _MV Hondius_ passengers are from the United States, and six other Americans disembarked in St. Helena on April 24. Authorities in at least five states—[Arizona](https://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/hantavirus-outbreak-az-resident-who-was-cruise-ship-being-monitored-health-department), [California](https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2026-05-07/californians-hantavirus-cruise-ship-risk), [Georgia](https://www.cbsnews.com/atlanta/news/two-georgia-residents-monitored-after-cruise-ship-hantavirus-outbreak/), [Virginia](https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/virginia-monitoring-traveler-linked-hantavirus-hit-cruise-ship-says-resident-is-2026-05-07/), and [Texas](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2026/05/07/texas-passengers-on-mv-hondius-hantavirus-cruise-ship/89966153007/)—are monitoring previous passengers of the ship, and none have shown symptoms. From starting its monitoring in 1993 until 2023, the[ U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention](https://www.cdc.gov/hantavirus/data-research/cases/index.html) has detected 890 cases of hantavirus in the country, of which 35% resulted in deaths. President Donald Trump said Thursday night he has been briefed on the hantavirus, and [he said](https://www.nbcnews.com/video/shorts/trump-says-he-s-been-briefed-on-hantavirus-262955077991) that “it’s very much—we hope—under control,” adding that “a lot of great people” are studying it and that the situation “should be fine, we hope.” Other passengers aboard the _MV Hondius_ hail from Australia, Belgium, France, Greece, Guatemala, India, Ireland, Japan, Montenegro, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Turkey, and Ukraine. All of them are asymptomatic to date, and the Spanish health ministry[ said](https://www.sanidad.gob.es/en/gabinete/notasPrensa.do?id=6901) that when the ship docks in the Canary Islands, the non-Spanish citizens will be repatriated ⁠to their countries. The WHO on Thursday added that it has contacted other countries whose nationals disembarked in St. Helena.
