You could also be forgiven for failing to recall, from [some high school lecture](https://entertainment.time.com/2010/07/09/top-10-books-you-were-forced-to-read-in-school/slide/lord-of-the-flies/), that William Golding’s debut novel is rooted in timely elements of his own experience, from fighting in the [Second World War](https://time.com/5832549/world-war-ii-memory/) to reading R.M. Ballantyne’s _The Coral Island_, an idealized tale of shipwrecked boys banding together to survive, to his young children. It might seem inconceivable, after decades of hit shows like [_Yellowjackets_](https://time.com/6266844/yellowjackets-the-power-matriarchy-tv/), [_Survivor_](https://time.com/collections/reality-tv-most-influential-seasons/6197745/survivor-season-1/),and [_Lost_](https://time.com/6994839/lost-on-netflix-how-to-watch/)plundering its mythology, that the book had never been adapted for television before this year. Such appropriation has, perhaps, hastened our collective disremembering of its details. _Lord of the Flies_ has become shorthand for civilization's descent into anarchic violence. But that’s hardly all it is. [Jack Thorne](https://time.com/collections/time100-health-2025/7279641/stephen-graham-jack-thorne/) hasn’t forgotten any of this. The writer of some of TV’s best recent social dramas—including the toxic-boyhood tragedy [_Adolescence_](https://time.com/7271212/adolescence-finale-netflix/)—brings to his four-part adaptation (now streaming on Netflix after premiering in February on the BBC) an eye for both the nuances of Golding’s characters and the ways in which they’re most relevant today. Bolstered by poetic visuals and stunning performances from the young cast, Thorne’s psychological approach offers profound insight into the unconscious impulses that underlie our current political crises. Redza—Eleven/Sony Pictures Television While mostly faithful to the book, this _Lord of the Flies_ smartly adjusts its story of midcentury schoolboys stranded on a desert island for an episodic medium by filtering each installment through the perspective of a different preteen character. First we follow intelligent, rational, yet physically vulnerable Piggy (David McKenna in a remarkable screen debut) as he stumbles about in the aftermath of a fateful plane crash and meets Ralph (Winston Sawyers), the brave, kind, and fair-minded natural leader who symbolizes civilization and will soon become the boys’ elected chief. With Piggy as the ideas man, thinking through issues like sanitation and proposing a signal fire to aid rescue efforts, Ralph uses his constituents’ goodwill to implement an ad-hoc social democracy that cares for even the youngest and weakest castaways. It doesn’t take long for this order to break down. When one child reports seeing a “beastie,” fear spreads through the camp. Quick to capitalize on it, Ralph’s rival Jack (Lox Pratt, another standout), who leads the slightly older and more bonded contingent of choirboys who have claimed the role of hunters, makes a play for dominance through brute strength. By turns violent and hedonistic, controlling and permissive, he appeals to the children’s ids with frenzied pig hunts followed by cathartic, bacchanalian feasts that make them feel invincible. An avatar for the savage impulses that, in Golding’s time, fueled the birth of fascism, Jack has a proverbial angel on one shoulder—Ike Talbut’s gentle, empathetic, spiritually attuned Simon—and a sadistic devil, Roger (Thomas Connor), on the other. (The creator of _Adolescence_ can’t help but connect sons back to their fathers.) They’re also unnecessary, given how thoroughly the plane-crash scenario exposes who each of these kids is and what their archetypes represent. Thankfully, he keeps these digressions brief. The geopolitics of World War II is not the global order of today; our egalitarians and authoritarians are different, too. The brilliance of this _Lord of the Flies_ is that it updates not the boys’ external circumstances but their internal landscapes in ways that resonate now. Tenderness is fleeting yet precious among boys desperate to telegraph masculine strength. Ralph struggles to find a fair response when his democratic principles are twisted to justify Jack’s undemocratic aims. And Jack becomes the most fascinating character of all, a brittle, self-deluding, not entirely calculated coward who lavishes his followers with love and intimidates his enemies with inflammatory rhetoric but literally cannot fight his own battles. As much as we admire Ralph, we also see how his noble flaws abet Jack’s rise—and, in turn, how the weakness that Jack is desperate to conceal unleashes an evil he can’t control.
