The trip, which landed at a time where the [U.K.-U.S. relationship has been under great strain](https://time.com/7382464/trump-starmer-conflict-uk-us-relationship-iran-war/) amid the fallout of the Iran war, afforded London and Washington the chance to renew its bond. During a White House military ceremony held for the royals, Trump—who has recently been highly critical of U.K. Prime Minister [Keir Starmer](https://time.com/article/2026/04/10/european-leaders-criticize-trump-over-iran-war-starmer-energy-prices/)—said Americans have "[no closer friends than the British](https://time.com/article/2026/04/28/trump-praises-uk-us-relationship-amid-starmer-feud-king-charles-visit/)." Charles also heralded the alliance when he followed in the footsteps of his late mother, [Queen Elizabeth II,](https://time.com/article/2026/04/27/king-charles-congress-speech-queen-elizabeth-address-1991/) and became the second British monarch to [address Congress](https://time.com/article/2026/04/28/king-charles-splits-from-trump-key-issues-congress-address/). Recognizing the 250th anniversary of American independence, Charles said: "From the bitter divisions of 250 years ago, we forged a friendship that has grown into one of the most consequential alliances in human history." But he also split from Trump in key areas by showcasing an unyielding support of NATO and urging the rejection of isolationism. Still, all parties have praised the trip, and Trump—a long-time admirer of the royal family—showcased great affection for Charles when he hosted a state banquet in honor of the royal visit.
