Seven of the victims were children of the suspected shooter. Police said that two women, including the gunman’s wife, were also shot but survived and were being treated for “serious injuries.” Another child, a girl age 12 previously misidentified as a boy age 13, [reportedly](https://people.com/one-child-of-la-mass-family-murderer-survived-by-jumping-off-roof-11954190) jumped off the roof of one of the homes in an apparent attempt to escape the shooting; police have said her injuries were not life-threatening. The suspected gunman was[ identified](https://x.com/FoxNews/status/2046039761702576539) as Shamar Elkins, who died after a police pursuit and shootout; police believe there are no other suspects. Shreveport Police Department chief Wayne Smith said in a Monday press conference that the violence appeared to stem from a “domestic dispute,” and added: “The chances are good that this was not the first time.” “This is a tragic situation—maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had,” Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux said in a press conference early Sunday. Here’s what to know. ## **What happened?** Shreveport police officers received the first call regarding a shooting at the 300 block of West 79th St. just before 6 a.m., Sunday morning, police chief Smith said. The caller stated that they were atop the house, while the suspect was inside and had shot someone. A follow-up call minutes later indicated that the suspect, whom the caller identified as Elkins, had already shot all nine people inside the house. The caller said in a subsequent call that she and her children had fled from the roof. According to[ NBC News](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/louisiana-shreveport-mass-shooting-rcna340868), Shreveport Police spokesperson Chris Bordelon said that many of the children appeared to have been shot in their sleep, with most shot in the head. “It is a disgusting and evil scene,” Bordelon added. Police arrived on scene just after 6 a.m., but they received another call of a shooting on nearby Harrison St., where the new caller stated that her boyfriend, also identified as Elkins, had shot her and taken her three children. The suspect then carjacked a male on West 79th near Linwood Avenue, and police, after locating the vehicle he stole, chased him into the next parish. Shortly before 6:30 a.m., officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect. Smith said the suspect carried what appeared to be an “assault pistol.” Elkins was declared dead on scene at 7:03 a.m, though Smith later clarified that it was unclear if Elkins died from the exchange of gunfire or through a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Caddo Parish Coroner’s office said autopsies were ordered for all the victims, who were identified in a press release as Jayla Elkins, 3; Shayla Elkins, 5; Kayla Pugh, 6; Layla Pugh, 7; Markaydon Pugh, 10; Sariahh Snow, 11; Khedarrion Snow, 6; and Braylon Snow, 5\. Seven of them are siblings, and one is their cousin. ## **Who was the shooter?** According to the[ New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/19/us/shreveport-mass-shooting-dead-children.html), citing public records, Elkins, 31, had been previously convicted at least twice: in 2019 on a firearms case after a man in a car pulled a gun on him and he fired his own weapon, and in 2016 for driving while intoxicated. Smith added that investigators are looking into how Elkins acquired a gun, despite having an illegal firearms conviction. The Army, in a statement to the media, said Elkins also served in the Louisiana Army National Guard for seven years until August 2020, but he was not deployed. He served as a signal support system specialist and a fire support specialist. Brown told the AP that Elkins shared four children with his wife and three with another woman who lived close by, and Brown added that Elkins and his wife were due in court Monday. Troy Brown, Elkins’ brother-in-law, who lived in the house with his wife, [told the AP](https://apnews.com/article/shreveport-louisiana-shooting-children-981e69dcfee2361fe81e27199c8b9b05) that Elkins had checked into a Department of Veterans Affairs hospital for mental health treatment for over a week in January, though he had appeared “better” when he returned. Before the incident, Brown said Elkins was stressed about his wife seeking a divorce, but everything appeared calm in the house when Brown left for work on Saturday evening. “All I know is he just snapped,” Brown told the AP. “If I wouldn’t have been at work, he was going to kill everybody in the house and that includes me.” Relatives of Elkins speaking to the _Times_ said he had been recently struggling with his mental health and his relationship with his wife. The _Times_ reported that on Easter Sunday earlier this month, Elkins called his mother Mahelia and his stepfather Marcus Jackson. The two told the _Times_ that their son sounded despondent and had said through tears that he wanted to take his own life as he was inundated with “dark thoughts.” “I told him, ‘You can beat stuff, man.
