Wes found this quite odd. Though business partners—the Felixes were in town networking for Always Alpha, the sports-management agency dedicated to female athletes that they co-founded in late 2024—Allyson, the [most decorated female track-and-field athlete in Olympic history](https://time.com/6087984/allyson-felix-tokyo-olympics-400-m/), never talked to her brother in such a formal, “can we put this on your calendar?” sort of manner. So Wes grew a little worried. Was something wrong? At the appointed time, Felix arrived with a pitch deck on her computer. Though she had retired from track after the [Tokyo Olympics in 2021](https://time.com/collections/100-most-influential-people-2021/6096046/allyson-felix-titan/)—she won a [relay gold](https://time.com/6088414/allyson-felix-relay-4x400-olympics/) and [400-m bronze](https://time.com/6087984/allyson-felix-tokyo-olympics-400-m/) at those Games, after[ giving birth to a daughter](https://time.com/6077124/allyson-felix-tokyo-olympics/) and leaving her longtime sponsor [Nike over a contract dispute](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/22/opinion/allyson-felix-pregnancy-nike.html)—she now told Wes that she wanted to return to running. His immediate reaction was relief: nothing was seriously wrong, and she’d do a few 10Ks or half-marathons for fun, like those approaching middle age are wont to do. But that’s not what she meant. The presentation was titled “Project Six,” because Felix wanted to try to make her sixth Olympic Games, in her hometown of Los Angeles, in 2028, when she will be 42\. Wes was shocked. “I felt there was a zero percent chance that’s what she was going to say,” he says. “I could have thought of a million things before she said that.” Felix’s slides outlined her reasoning. She labeled her attempt a “live experiment in human potential”—in her mind, just because no American sprinter has ever made the Games in their 40s doesn’t necessarily mean it’s impossible—called it a “A Love Story With Los Angeles.” Despite winning 11 Olympic medals, seven of them[ gold](https://olympics.time.com/2012/08/08/how-getting-mean-got-allyson-felix-gold/), she’d never had the opportunity to run in front of hometown fans. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime homecoming,” Felix wrote. “And it is the only thing powerful enough to pull me back.” Felix started thinking of pursuing LA28 about a year ago as she and her husband Kenny Ferguson—who sprinted for the University of South Carolina—were working out together on a track near their home north of Los Angeles. In recent years, athletes like [Tom Brady](https://time.com/collections/100-most-influential-people-2021/6096066/tom-brady-titan/), [LeBron James](https://time.com/6253527/lebron-james-breaks-scoring-record-kareem-abdul-jabbar/), and [Lindsey Vonn](https://time.com/7328290/lindsey-vonn-olympics-comeback-interview/) have found success into their 40s, and Felix found inspiration in their stories. She’s also seeking to upend expectations put on women in their 40s. “So many of us have been told not to do the big, bold thing,” Felix tells TIME in her first interview announcing her comeback. “You know, at this age, I should probably be staying home and taking care of my kids, doing all that. And just, why not? Let's flip it on its head. Let's go after the thing. Let's be vulnerable.” In the run-up to the 2028 Olympic trials, she doesn’t plan to compete regularly on the global track-and-field circuit, so that she can stay close to her children, daughter Camryn, 7, and son Trey, 2\. But she’ll need to enter races in order to qualify for the trials: Felix and her longtime coach, Bobby Kersee, plan to implement a full training schedule in October. Felix anticipates returning to certified competition sometime in 2027\. Felix wants to make clear that she’s not doing this for attention or some sort of cash grab. ”I would think track and field would not be the place to do it for the money,” she says with a laugh. She also doesn’t lack purpose. “I feel very fulfilled,” she says. Sure, watching track-and-field meets for the first few years after walking away could be tough: like many athletes, Felix struggled finding her identity after devoting her life to her sport. Felix attended the [Paris Olympics](https://time.com/7009969/most-memorable-paris-summer-olympics-moments/) with her family. “It was definitely mixed emotions,” she says. “There were moments where I was like, ‘Oh, this is so great. It’s so exciting to be in the stands and on the other side.’ And then there were moments where I was, ‘You know, I miss this feeling.’” But Felix insists she’s in a good place now, professionally and personally. She’s plenty busy with [Saysh](https://time.com/6073949/allyson-felix-launching-saysh-shoes/), the women’s footwear and apparel company which she co-founded and for which she serves as president, and Always Alpha. “I totally get the person who sticks around too long and you’re like, ‘What are they doing?’” says Felix. “I know, at 40, I am not at my peak. I have no illusions about that. I’m very clear in what it is and what I want to see. And so I hope it's seen that way.” And what this is, most of all, is curiosity. As people age, fast-twitch muscle fibers tend to fade first: not ideal for a sprinter. But in this biohacking era, Felix wants to explore techniques that can thwart conventional wisdom—and share them with others, through podcasts and videos, on a website, [moreinus.com](http://moreinus.com). During her track-and-field career, Felix was afraid to even take vitamins, lest she accidentally runs afoul of World Anti-Doping Agency regulations. Now, she’s eager to explore supplements, as long they’re still within the rules. Saunas, infrared technology, pool work—Felix thinks they’ll all play a role in her return. Two owners of women’s pro sports teams, Clara Wu Tsai of the New York Liberty and [Michele Kang](https://time.com/collections/time100-philanthropy-2025/7286058/michele-kang/) of the Washington Spirit, have recently launched[ innovation](https://kyniscainnovationhub.com/) [hubs](https://apnews.com/article/wu-tsai-alliance-female-athlete-d48cfcb738ca1e45fb1482b89ee35abd) aimed at improving female athlete performance. Felix wants to meet with both. She’s had preliminary conversations with Aspetar, a Doha-based hospital specializing in sports medicine and performance, about visiting. [Merlene Ottey](https://www.olympics.com/en/athletes/merlene-ottey-page) ran the 100 m at the 2004 Olympics, at age 44, reaching the semifinals. So Ottey offers some blueprint for Felix. But Ottey competed for Slovenia in those Athens Games, not her native Jamaica, making her path to the Games smoother. The U.S. Olympic sprint team, with its [deep bench](https://time.com/collections/women-of-the-year/7377881/sydney-mclaughlin-levrone/) of fast runners, is one of the [most difficult in the world to make.](https://time.com/6990187/olympic-trials-2024-track-field-gymnastics/) Felix will need standout times to make a relay pool. Her goal is to walk in the opening ceremony, on July 14, 2028\. “When I was competing, you just heard this roar for host-country athletes at the Olympics,” says Felix. “I would love to experience that.” Failure for her isn’t falling short of an historic appearance.
