Schwartz has spent much of her career in the military, following her father, a Naval officer, into the Navy. She graduated from [Brown University's](https://www.brownalumnimagazine.com/articles/2020-04-09/health-warrior) eight-year Program in Liberal Medical Education. Schwartz then earned a master’s degree in public health and a law degree from the University of Maryland and began working in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps with the Coast Guard, where she was involved with addressing health issues related to the [Deepwater Horizon oil spill](https://time.com/archive/6597019/the-far-ranging-costs-of-the-mess-in-the-gulf/) in the Gulf.
