The two just wrapped a movie together, an all-girls Vegas romp called _The Fifth Wheel,_ and bonded on set to the point that Glaser would entrust her life to the reality star-turned-serial [entrepreneur](https://time.com/collections/time100-companies-2023/6284875/kim-kardashian-time-cover-skims/). “I am proud to say I have [Kim Kardashian](https://time.com/6289791/kim-kardashian-time-interview/)’s phone number, and she would take my call at any time of night. She went to law school,” says Glaser, glossing over the fact that Kardashian did not pass the bar. “She's smart and calculating in a really brilliant way. And I know she would go to bat for me on almost anything.” Then Glaser rushes to qualify her friendship with one of the most famous people in the world. “In the next week, I might be scared to text her, but right now I feel like it's a solid connection.” Glaser has traveled the country as a stand-up comedian since she was 18 years old. She has appeared as a guest on podcasts and started one of her own. She has mastered the art of writing burns for celebrity roasts and put out four stand-up specials. She competed on _Dancing With the Stars_ and [_The Masked Singer_](https://time.com/collections/reality-tv-most-influential-seasons/6200462/the-masked-singer/)and hosted the [reality dating shows](https://time.com/collections/reality-tv-most-influential-seasons/6199108/reality-tv-influence-on-world/) _FBoy Island_ and _Blind Date_. In May 2024, at the age of 39, Glaser participated in the Netflix roast of Tom Brady. Her preternaturally calm delivery of joke after joke about Brady’s intense diet, his divorce, and his good looks went viral. Glaser seamlessly slipped into locker-room banter but capitalized on the fact that she was one of the only women onstage to brutalize Brady from a female perspective. “I get it,” [she joked](https://people.com/tom-brady-roasted-for-leaving-pregnant-bridget-moynahan-8643871) of his inability to retire, “it’s hard to walk away from something that’s not your pregnant girlfriend.” She was then asked to host the 2025 Golden Globes, literally an invitation into that elusive club of the ultra-famous, where she carefully toed the line between honoring and mocking the nominees. Her performance earned [glowing reviews](https://time.com/7204928/2025-golden-globes-review-nikki-glaser/) and Glaser was asked to [return this year](https://time.com/7343692/golden-globes-2026-recap/). Once again, she walked that tightrope of respectful provocation. “When I said, 'There are two Michael B. Jordans in [_Sinners_](https://time.com/7278537/sinners-review-ryan-coogler/) so Nikki B. Jerkin’,' I did not plan for his mom to be sitting next to him,” admits Glaser, who sends flowers and a personal note to all the targets of her jokes to thank them for being a good sport. She is slated to perform again next year. But both found themselves as the leads of a Netflix movie directed by Eva Longoria and produced by Will Ferrell. “I literally thought I would maybe get a small role. I got a call that I’m going to star in this movie. And I go, ‘Well, that's interesting, because no one knows if I can act or not,’” says Glaser over a video call from Los Angeles. “In Hollywood you try so hard to be in things, and then you reach a certain level of fame, and they just are like, ‘Here you go.’ And you're like, ‘But I haven't proven myself to you yet.’” But Glaser, whose new comedy special _Good Girl_ is out on Hulu on April 24, is determined to do just that. Now 41, she is rereading [_Bossypants_](https://time.com/archive/6595569/youre-not-the-boss-of-her-tina-feys-new-memoir/), Tina Fey’s memoir, because she is toying with the idea of writing a book herself. “She just has such a way of her distinct voice coming off the page,” says Glaser of Fey. “You get approached about books and they're like, ‘Do a ghostwriter’ and it's like, that's just not an option for a comic.” She’s also been rewatching iconic rom-coms like _When Harry Met Sally_ and _You’ve Got Mail_ as she writes her first screenplay with Judd Apatow, whose children she babysat when she first arrived in Los Angeles in 2006\. During a long conversation, Apatow teased some ideas out of her, focusing on her skepticism of the concept of marriage and decision not to have children in pursuit of her career. It’s a tried-and-true formula: Amy Schumer, [Pete Davidson](https://time.com/5802587/big-time-adolescence-review-pete-davidson/), [Billy Eichner](https://time.com/6211889/billy-eichner-bros-movie-interview/), [Kumail Najiani](https://time.com/4825536/kumail-nanjiani-the-big-sick-profile/), and Lena Dunham have all harvested their personal lives for well-received projects shepherded by the comedy superproducer. “I want to write a really great rom-com and do it before I'm totally aged out of ingenue rom-com status,” Glaser says. For once, she’s not joking. Breaking out in your 40s is rare for women in Hollywood. And Glaser is determined to make the most of this moment, to the point that little else matters to her right now as much as leveling up her career. “If something has to give, it has to be personal relationships, ever having children, romantic love,” she says. “I always dreamed of having this kind of success, and I really didn't think it was going to happen for me. And I had accepted that. I was at peace with it. So I feel like I've just been given this opportunity to do exactly what I've always dreamed of. So I have to say yes to everything.” ---  Photograph by Mark Seliger for TIME In pursuit of that goal, Glaser has told many an interviewer, talk-show host, and podcaster that she is planning to get a facelift soon. She is serious about the procedure, but her fixation with her appearance has also become part of herpersona. Much of her comedy lives in the tension between Glaser’s own insecurities about her looks and industry pressure to look as young as possible. “I just found fame at the age of 40, which is usually when you're kind of put out to pasture,” she tells me after wrapping up a photo shoot in which a team of stylists and makeup artists swooped in between shots to make sure she looked flawless. “You're vapid and you're shallow if you care about your looks, when really I just care about my looks because other people seem to in the business I work in. It gets me jobs and success and money.” Glaser gestures to her pink outfit that exposes a bit of perfectly bronzed leg. “I’m in fake eyelashes, and this is a spray tan. I had a stylist dress me. This is fake hair,” she says. “So I strip any credit that I could ever take from being called ‘beautiful’ away. I don't even reap any of the benefits of it internally, which I guess is healthy, but I struggle with it, and I find that struggle interesting.” Like many women, Glaser has struggled with body-image issues for most of her life. (Much of her new special centers around the crippling self-consciousness she felt about her vagina in college.) Glaser doesn’t think she’ll ever stop thinking this way. “I would love to reach neutrality with my body and my looks and not care about what people think and just dress for myself,” she says. “But I don't know that I'll ever get over it, especially being in front of a camera. And I want to have longevity. My end goal is to be heard and to be seen and to be loved. But sometimes I might have to slice into my face to get it.” She pulls out her phone. “I could text Kim about this right now,” she says. “She's on the front lines of all the research about this kind of beauty stuff. I love it when it works, but I really resent it as well.” Those familiar with Glaser’s work know, of course, that the plastic-surgery jokes are tame compared to some of her other material. She specializes in raunchy comedy, mining her own sex life for laughs, and often talks about third-rail topics. “Sarah Silverman was the first person I saw that just speaks to me on so many levels. She's not only adorable and someone I would want to be friends with. My guy friends want to f-ck her but they also seem to respect her mind,” Glaser says. “I want to be someone who's smart and f-ckable and adorable and likable and seems nice but is saying awful things.” Glaser spends a good portion of _Good Girl_ cracking jokes about pedophilia, an extended version of her [2025 _Saturday Night Live_](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P08QJ5CK3jY) monologue, which also addressed the topic and received mixed reviews. Some critics and fans called her brave, others tasteless. “Many audiences for many years were like, ‘Don't do that.’ I wasn't getting good feedback. I was offending people. I was maybe upsetting people who had been victimized in the audience. And so it was really important to me to get that right,” she says. She tweaked the joke, trying it out in different ways while on the road. "I did that chunk of material on a show that I was opening for a friend of mine, who’s a well-established comedian, and he was like, ‘How did you do that?’ And he did say that it was because I was a woman, and that’s the only reason I could do it. And I don’t think that was the reason. I think he had to make up some kind of excuse for why he couldn’t do that and I could, but it was because I worked really hard to get it right," Glaser says. Still, as much as she defends the edgy nature of her jokes, she once feared they might limit her. “It used to worry me more that I'm like the sex comic and that I'm not going to be family friendly,” she says. “They're not going to let me on network TV. I'm not going to be able to be in movies, because they've heard too much about my graphic sex life. I realized that people can really separate you into different spaces.” --- Glaser may now be a Hollywood insider, but she actually does her best work in her hometown of St. Louis, where she filmed _Good Girl_. She likes to write in public—“I need accountability”—but hates the idea of posting up at a hip coffee shop in Los Angeles. “You don’t want to look like a scrub out and about in L.A. with your laptop,” she jokes. More to the point, the temptations of show business simply do not exist in the same way in Missouri. “I am a workaholic, and if I live in New York or L.A., I'll be doing a podcast every day. I'll say yes to a \[stand-up\] spot every night. I compare it to being an alcoholic: Going to St. Louis is like locking up the liquor because there’s no work for me in St. Louis.” (Glaser quit drinking alcohol in 2011.)  Photograph by Mark Seliger for TIME This kind of discipline is necessary given her current workload. “I really feel like when I studied Tom Brady I learned how to train efficiently,” she says. “I always prided myself on, like, ‘I work the most hours.’ I would brag about it. ‘I haven't slept. I don't have time to work out. I don't have time to eat.’ Now I realize I am much more efficient and work better when I am gentle to myself.” Her job is challenging enough as it is. She is not inherently a person who enjoys taking risks onstage and yet she has essentially forced herself to make a living out of that very endeavor. “When I was in seventh grade, I was so scared to perform,” she says. “I would almost pass out. But I signed up for a play and I just was like, ‘Well, you can't get out of it.’ I feel like obligation is the key to my success.” She employed this tactic for the Globes and _SNL_, among other things. “You can't say no to _SNL_, so you say yes and you figure it out,” she says. “The pain of missing out on it because I was scared is worse than the pain of doing it and bombing.” Her greatest fear isn’t bombing anyway. It’s performing a joke that’s “too easy”—one she knows will get a laugh but that she herself isn’t satisfied with. She cringed as she ribbed [Leonardo DiCaprio](https://time.com/7338653/entertainer-of-the-year-2025-leonardo-dicaprio/) at the Globes about always dating younger women. But the quip got her to the follow-up joke she really wanted to make. “I'm sorry I made that joke. It’s cheap,” she said. “I tried not to, but we don’t know anything else about you, man. Like, there’s nothing else. Open up.” That got a genuine laugh from one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars. As Glaser reflects on her whirlwind few years, she seems as secure as a woman who has made a career out of talking about her insecurities can be. Perhaps that’s because after more than two decades as a professional comedian with a [well-documented penchant for preparation](https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/03/arts/television/nikki-glaser-golden-globes-host.html), she manages to feel in control in even the most intimidating situation. “If you look confident, you can get away with anything,” she says. “That's the thing that all the hours I've put in have paid off more than ever—I can look comfortable on a stage, even though my heart is racing and my palms are sweating and I'm trying not to make eye contact with Leonardo DiCaprio.” Or perhaps it’s simply because if this leap from stand-up to acting in films, writing scripts, and publishing memoirs doesn’t work, she knows she can always return to her home on the stage. “I think I'll be OK,” she says. “If I go back to working Funny Bones and being a road comic, that was a good life.
