Dan Levy might have begun his career as a nepo baby, the offspring and collaborator of comedy legend [Eugene Levy](https://time.com/4259152/eugene-levy-schitts-creek/), but he has since proven his meritocratic bona fides. The father-son duo’s warm, far-fetched CBC sitcom [_Schitt’s Creek_](https://time.com/5560209/catherine-ohara-schitts-creek-interview/)—on which the younger Levy served as showrunner, writer, and occasionally director—arrived in the U.S. via the obscure cable channel Pop TV. Instead of languishing there, it grew a word-of-mouth following as previously aired episodes began streaming here on Netflix. By its final season, the show had collected just about every [major award](https://time.com/5891033/emmys-2020-review/), its finale was simulcast on multiple networks owned by Pop TV parent company Paramount, and Levy was popping up in everything from HBO’s prestige pandemic project _Coastal Elites_ to Clea DuVall’s queer holiday romance _Happiest Season_.

Six years later, the man who brought us the gentle love story of David and Patrick remains ubiquitous. He wrote, produced, directed, and starred in the feature [_Good Grief_](https://time.com/6549343/good-grief-gives-grief-a-home-for-the-holidays/). He’s done prominent guest-actor gigs in shows as different as [_Curb Your Enthusiasm_](https://time.com/6590886/larry-david-curb-your-enthusiasm-season-12/), [_Sex Education_](https://time.com/5492639/sex-education-netflix-review/), and the much-maligned [Sam Levinson](https://time.com/6282102/the-idol-cannes-hbo-controversy/)\-[The Weeknd](https://time.com/collections/100-most-influential-people-2020/5888500/the-weeknd/) drama [_The Idol_](https://time.com/6281900/the-idol-review-hbo/). He [successfully co-hosted the Emmys](https://time.com/7021458/emmys-2024-review-eugene-dan-levy/) alongside his dad. He even donned a white wig to play [Andy Warhol](https://time.com/6155980/andy-warhol-diaries-review-netflix/) in [Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts movie](https://time.com/6974141/seinfeld-netflix-unfrosted-pop-tarts/). What he hasn’t done, until now, is make another sitcom. In that respect, _Big Mistakes_—a Netflix comedy that Levy created with [_I Love LA_](https://time.com/7329292/i-love-la-review-rachel-sennott/)It girl Rachel Sennott—is his long-awaited follow-up to _Schitt’s Creek_, on the platform that made it a stateside sensation. Like that series, it’s built on a solid base of familial love and dysfunction. But things get shakier the more it leans on the organized-crime caper flimsily constructed atop that foundation.

Dan Levy and Taylor Ortega in Big Mistakes Spencer Pazer—Netflix

The perpetrators of said mistakesare Levy’s Nicky and his sister Morgan (Taylor Ortega from _Welcome to Flatch_), whose antagonistic yet loyal relationship gives the show an emotional throughline. He is the neurotic but well-liked pastor at a church in his suburban New Jersey hometown, Glenview, that accepts him as a gay man with the caveat that he must stay celibate. For the past year, however, he’s been secretly dating—and having sex with—hunky Tareq (Jacob Gutierrez), who’s impatiently waiting for Nicky to find a more progressive flock. Self-destructive Morgan, an archetypal Sennott character, is teaching at the local elementary school and recommitted to her clingy high school boyfriend, Max (Jack Innanen from [_Adults_](https://time.com/7287058/adults-fx-review-overcompensating/)), after failing to find fame in New York. Each trapped in a different form of arrested development, the siblings channel their frustrations into bickering like teens who share a bathroom. Their mom, Linda, played by the infallible [Laurie Metcalf](https://time.com/5006939/lady-bird-captures-joy-pain-coming-of-age/), runs the family’s hardware store, hovers over her adult children, and cares for her own terminally ill battle-axe of a mother (Judith Roberts). With the kids’ nonnaat death’s door, Linda is preparing to launch her dream campaign for mayor of Glenview, managed by her smarmy youngest daughter, Natalie ([_Knock at the Cabin_](https://time.com/6251987/knock-at-the-cabin-review/)’s Abby Quinn).

If Levy and Sennott had wanted to make a comedy about characters wrestling with the possibilities and limitations of the small community their family has called home for generations—a sort of townie _Schitt’s Creek_—this setup would’ve provided ample material. Instead, _Big Mistakes_ gets Nicky and Morgan mixed up with Jersey gangsters. Ordered by Linda to buy Nonnaa necklace for her birthday, Morgan pilfers what she thinks is costume jewelry from a shop. In fact, she has quite traceably stolen the precious diamond tennis necklace the store’s criminal owners were hiding in plain sight. The low-level thug responsible for keeping it safe (Boran Kuzum’s Yusuf) is desperate to get it back. But by the time he shows up to wave a gun in the siblings’ faces, the jewels are around Nonna’s neck… in her casket.

Dan Levy, Boran Kuzum, and Taylor Ortega in Big Mistakes Spencer Pazer—Netflix

The trio’s efforts to recover it lead to Nicky and Morgan’s nonconsensual recruitment into the gang, running illegal errands for which their respectable careers are supposed to offer plausible cover. While he’s a nervous wreck, she turns out to be a crime savant, to the delight of the bumbling crooks who discovered her. As Morgan becomes embroiled in increasingly dangerous schemes, with Nicky along for the ride at her inexplicable insistence, variations on the same fish-out-of-water joke about middle-class millennials wrapped up in their own petty squabbles as they navigate a gritty underworld get old. The many plot holes are part of the problem. Payment for the siblings’ labors is never discussed. I guess we’re supposed to believe gangs are always pressing civilians into indefinite servitude. Then again, _Schitt’s Creek_ was never realistic; who owns a town, much less moves into a motel there when they go broke? We accepted it because it was fun to spend time with the Roses and their neighbors, kind weirdos all. It’s harder to suspend your disbelief for a storyline populated by international mobsters who come off as disappointingly generic. If you’ve seen [_Barry_](https://time.com/6270454/barry-season-4-breaking-bad/)or [_Narcos_](https://time.com/5448785/diego-luna-narcos/), you’ve met these guys before.

_Big Mistakes_ can be perceptive and funny when it focuses on the chaotic family unit, especially when Metcalf is present. Nicky and Morgan’s banter is great (“I was_fine_ when I came in here!” he shouts at her in the back of the truck Yusuf is using to kidnap them. “Then you started screaming!”). But I wanted to see more of Linda’s campaign against an obnoxious misogynist (Darren Goldstein); more of Nicky sorting through the conflict between his job, his relationship, and his faith; more of Max’s imperious power-broker mom, played by ice queen extraordinaire Elizabeth Perkins; more of Natalie’s whole deal. That these elements are crowded out by the gangster plot might constitute another instance of the monolithic crime genre’s incursion into TV projects where it detracts from the psychology of fascinating characters (see also: [_DTF St. Louis_](https://time.com/7381285/dtf-st-louis-review/)) or works against the natural talents of the showrunner (_Derry Girls_ creator Lisa McGee’s [_How to Get to Heaven From Belfast_](https://time.com/7378326/how-to-get-to-heaven-from-belfast-review/)). Not every story needs a splash of blood. The season finale leaves us with reason to believe that a second season will do a better job integrating the crime stuff with the family stuff. I’d still rather see the version of _Big Mistakes_ that didn’t have to.
