# America's Top GreenTech Companies of 2026

Green technology has hit a turning point. Last year, despite geopolitical turmoil and market chaos, clean energy cleared [major goalposts](https://time.com/7339625/clean-energy-boom-2025/ "undefined"), with solar and wind power outpacing coal as the leading source of electricity in many countries, as cost effectiveness surpassed that of fossil fuels. With global energy demand rising, more money is now being invested into clean energy, also [outpacing fossil fuel](https://www.wri.org/insights/state-clean-energy-charted "undefined"). To assess the most notable technology shaping the sustainability space, TIME and Statista partnered to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the top-performing U.S. companies that are focused on developing or providing technologies, products, or services that help mitigate or reverse the environmental impacts of human activity. Companies were ranked based on positive environmental impact, innovation, and financial strength, and the top 250 were named to “America’s Top GreenTech Companies of 2026.”

A full fifth of the list falls into the renewable energy category, with companies in the top ten focusing mainly on geothermal and solar power. This is at least partially driven by the proliferation of AI; as data centers grow their energy consumption, [companies like Google](https://time.com/collections/time-100-climate-2025/7326543/tyler-norris/ "undefined") have been looking to diversify their energy sources, powering investments to many of the companies on the list. Rising star [Fervo](https://time.com/collections/time100-companies-2025/7289648/fervo-energy/ "undefined"), which provides geothermal energy, has [climbed its way](https://time.com/7344228/americas-top-greentech-companies-of-2025/ "undefined") to the top of this year’s list. Last December it raised [$462 million in a series E](https://www.wsj.com/finance/fervo-energy-raises-462-million-lands-google-as-investor-27a06c13?gaa%5Fat=eafs&gaa%5Fn=AWEtsqe-l5w2YF6tfSF2d9mL-GKLsOgfoSPzBfw6fBgdRh5XeCzd7eSeiVGReuUCeaM%3D&gaa%5Fts=6994de17&gaa%5Fsig=iFM3g9y5vRgx41aSJrMLa6dRgXZ7OI5wUo%5FSoZOngV3WVQI4u3AoL1fn4W1pyYOEMzhNRG-4wWBZXXG%5FbVibBQ%3D%3D "undefined") with Google, whose data centers in Nevada it powers, and [filed to go public](https://www.axios.com/pro/climate-deals/2026/01/22/fervo-ipo-s1-geothermal-energy "undefined") in early 2026\. In February, Google also [signed a 150 MW geothermal power deal with Ormat](https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/climate-energy/ormat-signs-150-mw-geothermal-power-deal-with-nv-energy-supply-google-nevada-2026-02-17/ "undefined") (no. 4), and last December, Google’s parent company [acquired energy infrastructure provider Intersect ](https://www.cnbc.com/2025/12/22/alphabet-to-acquire-intersect.html "undefined")(no. 17) for $4.75 billion. Sam Altman of OpenAI has backed nuclear fusion startup Helion (no. 27), which in a February test of its Polaris prototype reactor passed what they say is [a major heating milestone](https://techcrunch.com/2026/02/13/fusion-startup-helion-hits-blistering-temps-as-it-races-toward-2028-deadline/ "undefined") of 150 million degrees Celsius.


As the energy market evolved, solar company [Sunrun](https://time.com/collections/time100-climate-2024/7172588/mary-powell/ "undefined") (no. 11) began offering new solutions. It has partnered with Ford and Tesla to develop and test vehicle-to-grid technology that allows EV batteries to discharge stored energy back into the grid during peak times, stabilizing the grid and lowering energy costs for everyone in the system. It also created an innovative business model around solar as a subscription service (where users pay a monthly fee to rent and get energy from solar panels installed on their homes, reducing the upfront cost of installation). These fees as well as profits the company makes from selling solar energy it generates back into the grid has allowed it to [thrive amid a sweeping government crackdown](https://www.nytimes.com/2025/12/09/climate/solar-power-subscriptions-sunrun.html "undefined") on credits that would have lowered the cost barrier for homeowners to install their own renewable energy system. 

Elsewhere, second-ranked Pivot Bio (no. 2) is using gene-edited microbes that create a natural fertilizer for farmers. Naturally occurring microbes live in the roots of all plants, with enzymes that function like tiny fertilizer factories that can turn nitrogen gas from the air into ammonia. Pivot uses gene editing to keep the enzymes turned on and working at maximum volume. These microbes even out the availability of nitrogen, allowing farmers to maximize yield while [using less synthetic fertilizer](https://acsess.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/agj2.21729?domain=p2p%5Fdomain&token=EUWWJ9HMDEJAVXTI3Y4C "undefined"). Since 2022, farmers that have added Pivot microbes into their fertilizer mix have used more than 129,000 metric tons less synthetic nitrogen fertilizer, according to the company, and have conserved more than 665 million gallons of manufacturing water, as well as avoided more than 102,600 metric tons of nitrate leaching. 


Making more of less could prove lifesaving for farmers at a time when [synthetic fertilizer faces logistical problems](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/mar/20/iran-war-us-farming-impact?CMP=GTUS%5Femail "undefined") resulting from geopolitical tensions. “The challenge with nitrogen fertilizer is you have to ship this physical millions of metric tons around the world to be able to get to where agriculture is,” says Pivot’s chief innovation officer Karsten Temme, and since natural gas is a feedstock for the product, much of it originates [from near natural gas fields in the Gulf](https://carnegieendowment.org/emissary/2026/03/fertilizer-iran-hormuz-food-crisis "undefined"), and are under threat as conflict escalates in the region. “The great thing about having microbes is that all these microbes can be grown using sugar, water. So it's like running a micro brewery…We can ship that all around the world very easily.”

CRISPR editing AgTech firm Pairwise (no. 26) on the other hand is partnering with big firms like Mars for cacao research. Their Fulcrum genome-editing platform is now being used around the world to optimize and evolve a broad range of crops. “Fruit is being produced from the first edited compact, higher density, blackberry plants in Colombia, allowing for greater production of a delicious and nutritious berry using fewer resources,” says Pairwise CEO Tom Adams. As fruit volume increases, the company expects limited sales to start in the U.S. soon. Pairwise also launched a pitless cherry partnership with Sun World.
