Iran launched a fresh wave of strikes on Israel Tuesday morning and vowed to fight “until complete victory” just a day after [President Donald Trump](https://time.com/7382697/trump-iran-war/ "undefined") heralded “[very good and productive conversations](https://time.com/article/2026/03/23/trump-postpones-strikes-iranian-power-plants-iran-threatens-persian-gulf/ "undefined")” towards resolution—talks Iran has denied took place.

In a statement issued via state media, Iranian military official Ali Abdollahi Aliabadi [said](https://t.me/Tasnimnews/400452 "undefined") the country’s armed forces are "committed to defending the dignity and victory of Iran, and will continue this proud path.”

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also [pledged](https://t.me/Tasnimnews/400397 "undefined") to launch heavy missile and drone attacks at Israeli military personnel in northern Israel and near Gaza unless Israel ceases strikes in Lebanon and Gaza. According to IRGC-affiliated state news Tasnim, they said Israel has already crossed “all red lines.”

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that “search and rescue forces” had been sent to sites in central and [southern](https://t.me/idfofficial/17355 "undefined") Israel, “where reports of impacts have been received.”

The military also published [footage ](https://videoidf.azureedge.net/6a34e691-6170-44d4-a692-417704664a6b "undefined")from impact sites in Tel Aviv, showing damage to multi-story buildings and cars, with debris littered on the road.

Much like Iran, Israel has vowed not to scale back its military action.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that “there’s more to come” regarding strikes on Hezbollah and Iranian infrastructure.

“We are continuing to strike in both Iran and Lebanon. We are smashing the missile program and the nuclear program, and we continue to deal severe blows to Hezbollah… there is more to come,”[ he said](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/sxsDkvZh86Q "undefined").

Netanyahu added that he had spoken with Trump, who “believes there is an opportunity… to realize the goals of the war through an agreement that will safeguard our vital interests.”

Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz said Tuesday that Israeli troops will take control of a large swathe of southern Lebanon as part of its ongoing campaign against Hezbollah.

[Israel also announced ](https://t.me/idfofficial/17366 "undefined")a new “wide-scale wave of strikes on production sites belonging to the Iranian terror regime in several areas in Iran." The IDF [confirmed](https://t.me/idfofficial/17362 "undefined") it has now launched attacks against more than 3,000 targets in Iran since the start of the war.

The continued exchanges of missiles between [Iran](https://time.com/article/2026/03/18/iran-war-united-states-warning-ceasefire-strikes-escalation/ "undefined") and Israel stand in stark contrast to Trump’s remarks on Monday, during which he postponed strikes on Iranian power plants—military action he had threatened in an attempt to get Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

“I am pleased to report that the United States of America and the country of Iran have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of hostilities in the Middle East,” Trump [said](https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/116278232362967212 "undefined").

Based on the “tenor and tone” of the “constructive conversations” which are set to continue throughout the week, Trump relayed his decision to postpone strikes, but noted it was “subject to the success of ongoing meetings and discussions.”

He later, when talking to reporters at Palm Beach International before boarding Air Force One, claimed that Iran wants “very much to make a deal” but threatened a continuation of the war if a settlement isn’t reached. “Otherwise, we’ll just keep bombing our little hearts out,” he said.

Trump said the U.S. were talking to a "top person" in Iran—someone other than the new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

His account was swiftly rejected by Iran.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s parliament speaker, [insisted](https://x.com/mb%5Fghalibaf/status/2036108700524347420 "undefined") "no negotiations have been held with the U.S." He labeled other accounts as "fake news" used to "manipulate the financial and oil markets, and escape the quagmire in which the U.S. and Israel are trapped."

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has since said his country is willing to “facilitate meaningful and conclusive talks” to end the war. Trump [acknowledged](https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/116284693281091216 "undefined") the offer via social media.

When Trump presented a hopeful update of productive talks with Iran, global oil prices dropped instantly. But that has changed significantly following Iranian officials rebuking Trump’s account and the escalating strikes traded between Iran and Israel.

### **Global turmoil as energy prices soar**

On Tuesday, the price of brent crude oil [jumped](https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/brent-crude-oil "undefined") above $100 per barrel once again.

At the center of the soaring prices lies the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman through which around a fifth of global oil production flows.

The waterway is being used as a geopolitical bargaining chip in the war, with Iran effectively bringing the free flow of oil and liquified natural gas to a halt.

Gasoline prices in the U.S. have seen a significant rise since the first U.S.-Israeli strikes landed in Iran on Feb. 28\. The national average price sits at [$3.97](https://gasprices.aaa.com/ "undefined") per gallon as of Tuesday morning, up from $2.95 a month prior.

Iranian strikes on energy infrastructure in the Gulf region have also caused disruption, with refineries and ports targeted.

State-owned [QatarEnergy](https://x.com/qatarenergy/status/2034726978637471993 "undefined") announced last week that strikes on its main gas hub, Ras Laffan, had reduced export capacity by 17%, with damage to production facilities expected to take five years to repair.

Philippines President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. signed an Executive Order on Tuesday declaring a state of national energy emergency “in light of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and the resulting imminent danger posed upon the availability and stability of the country’s energy supply.”

Per a press release issued by the President’s office, “heightened geopolitical tensions” in the Middle East region have created “uncertainty in global energy markets, severe disruptions in supply chains, and significant volatility and upward pressure on international oil prices, thereby posing a threat to the country’s energy security.”

Concern also remains high among E.U. leadership.

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, upon confirming that Australia and the European Union had reached a long-awaited trade deal on Tuesday, urged for de-escalation.

“It is time to go to the negotiation table and to end the hostilities,” she [said](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16OCC1Ldgvw&t=1040s "undefined"). “The situation is critical for the energy supplies worldwide. We all feel the knock-on effects on gas and oil prices… It it of utmost importance we come to a solution that is negotiated.”

### **Iran’s power structure**

Since former Supreme Leader[ Ali Khamenei ](https://time.com/7381859/ali-khamenei-obituary-supreme-leader-iran-dead-86/ "undefined")was killed in U.S.-Israeli strikes on Feb. 28, several other senior officials and members of the late Ayatollah's inner circle have been targeted, drastically changing the country's lines of leadership.

[Ali Larijani](https://time.com/article/2026/03/17/israel-reports-killing-iranian-security-official-ali-larijani-gholamreza-soleimani/ "undefined"), one of Iran’s most senior security officials and a close associate of the late Supreme Leader, was killed on March 17\. Gholamreza Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Basij force—a plain-clothes militia unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps—was killed the same day. The IDF also confirmed it had killed [Esmaeil Khatib](https://x.com/IDF/status/2034221005569175570 "undefined"), Iran’s Intelligence Minister.

Larijani’s successor has been confirmed as Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, a former commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guards.

Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of the late Ayatollah, was confirmed as Iran’s new Supreme Leader on March 8\. Trump has been dismissive of Mojtaba’s appointment, having previously referred to him as an “unacceptable” choice.

Trump, when discussing the "productive" talks he claims are happening between the U.S. and Iran, said American officials are dealing with a “top person," someone other than the new Supreme Leader.

There has since been speculation that the person in question might be [Ghalibaf](https://time.com/article/2026/03/24/iran-war-mohammed-baqer-qalibaf-leader-biography-tehran-mayor-speaker/ "undefined").
Politico [reported](https://www.politico.com/news/2026/03/23/hes-a-hot-option-white-house-eyes-irans-parliament-speaker-as-potential-u-s-backed-leader-00840730 "undefined") Monday that the Trump Administration is “quietly weighing Iran’s parliament speaker as a potential partner—and even a future leader,” citing two unnamed officials.
