He was 81. Mueller’s former law firm, WilmerHale, confirmed his death in a statement to [TIME](https://time.com/5556331/mueller-investigation-indictments-guilty-pleas/) that mourned “the passing of our friend and former partner.” “Bob was an extraordinary leader and public servant and a person of the greatest integrity. His service to our country, including as a decorated officer in the Marine Corps, as FBI Director, and at the [Department of Justice](https://time.com/5610317/mueller-report-myths-breakdown/), was exemplary and inspiring. We are deeply proud that he was our partner,” the statement said. “Our thoughts are with Bob’s family and loved ones during this time,” it added. His death was first reported by the New York _Times_, which posted a statement attributed to Mueller’s family. After graduating from Princeton in 1966 and earning a master’s degree from New York University, he volunteered for the Marines. In 1968, he was sent to Vietnam, where he served as an officer for three years, earning a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star with a V for valor. After a long career in law, Mueller was nominated by Republican President George W. Bush and unanimously approved by the Senate to lead the FBI just days before the 9/11 attacks. He would go on to transform the bureau into a force against terrorism at a time when the country faced unparalleled threats. He and the bureau were given unprecedented power through the passage of the controversial Patriot Act, which expanded the federal government’s use of no-fly lists and created a database of citizens’ personal information. He received bipartisan support during his tenure as director and was asked by Democratic President Barack Obama to stay past the usual 10-year term. With 12 years at the agency under his belt when he retired in 2013, Mueller was the longest-serving director since J. Edgar Hoover. Still, his time at the FBI did not make him a household name. In fact, the [TIME profile](https://time.com/4783549/robert-mueller-fbi-special-counsel-donald-trump-russia/) of him in 2011 said that his “anonymity in the role is almost a parlor trick.” Instead, Mueller captured the nation's attention for two years after his no-nonsense sensibilities led to his being called back into service in May 2017. ## Russia probe In the aftermath of Trump’s firing of FBI Director James B. Comey, the Justice Department [tapped](https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/appointment-special-counsel) Mueller as special counsel in the probe of Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election and tasked him with uncovering any coordination between Moscow and members of Trump’s campaign and prosecuting any crimes that were committed in the process. Mueller’s investigation lasted 22 months and resulted in the indictments of 34 people—both Trump associates and Russian intelligence officers—and multiple guilty convictions, including six convictions of Trump campaign associates. Still, Mueller stopped short of indicting Trump, the sitting president at the time, much to the dismay of Democrats. In a rare public statement in 2019, Mueller said his decision not to indict Trump did not exonerate the President of wrongdoing. “If we had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so,” he [said](https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/speech/special-counsel-robert-s-mueller-iii-makes-statement-investigation-russian-interference). “We did not, however, make a determination as to whether the President did commit a crime.
